We are beginning to ask computers for outcomes rather than giving them every instruction.

The consequences could rival the internet’s, and in some areas eventually exceed them. AI reaches into the work of producing knowledge and making decisions. If that ability becomes dependable and inexpensive, it could change who has access to expertise, how companies operate and what people spend their working lives doing. Connecting it to capable robots would extend its reach to physical labor.

Those possibilities deserve ambition, but also a clear view of what has actually happened. Electronic computers, transistors and the foundations of modern AI emerged around the same era that flying-saucer reports captured public attention. The Roswell incident occurred in July 1947; Bell Labs’ first working transistor followed that December. That overlap has encouraged speculation that recovered alien craft supplied technologies later introduced as human inventions. A shared period, however, cannot establish a shared origin. 1,2

The documented history reaches back well before Roswell. Alan Turing’s work on computation dates to 1936. ENIAC was built between 1943 and 1945 and publicly unveiled in February 1946. It used vacuum tubes, reflecting an established engineering tradition. Electronic computing was already developing before the most famous alleged crash. 3,4

Semiconductor research has a similarly traceable history. Julius Lilienfeld filed a semiconductor amplifier patent in 1926, although a proposed device is different from a demonstrated working transistor. By 1939, William Shockley was considering semiconductor amplification at Bell Labs. Failed experiments, wartime interruption, renewed research and John Bardeen’s analysis of semiconductor

surface effects preceded the 1947 breakthrough by Bardeen and Walter Brattain. The proposal, written in 1955 by John McCarthy and three colleagues, already used the term “artificial intelligence” and set out an ambitious agenda involving language, abstraction and problem-solving. 7,8

The early dream was expansive. Progress was uneven.

Some researchers built systems that searched through possible moves or manipulated symbols according to logical rules. Others pursued artificial neural networks, mathematical systems loosely inspired by connected nerve cells. Expert systems later captured specialist knowledge in rules: if certain conditions were present, a particular conclusion might follow. These approaches achieved useful results within constrained settings, but the untidiness of everyday life exposed their limits.

A human knows that a cup can be empty, cracked, too hot to touch or hidden behind another object. Encoding enough rules to deal with every such possibility quickly becomes overwhelming. Periods remembered as AI winters brought funding cuts and diminished enthusiasm, although research never stopped everywhere at once. Over time, learning from data became increasingly important alongside hand-built rules. Instead of specifying every feature that distinguishes one thing from another, researchers trained systems on examples. Better computers and larger digital collections made that approach increasingly useful. 9

A landmark came in 2012, when a deep neural network developed by Alex Krizhevsky, Ilya Sutskever and Geoffrey Hinton achieved striking results in an image-recognition competition. Its success combined several ingredients: a large collection of labeled images, an effective network design and graphics processors capable of handling enormous amounts of computation. Deep learning had a history before that moment, but this result helped demonstrate its practical power. 10

Then, in 2017, researchers introduced the Transformer architecture in a paper titled “Attention Is All You Need.” Transformers made it easier to train models that could learn relationships across sequences of information. More of human life had become digital, providing immense quantities of text and other material from which models could learn. Specialized chips made larger computations feasible. Improved architectures allowed researchers to train more capable models. Additional training helped turn those models into systems that followed instructions and responded usefully to people.

The interface mattered as much as many observers initially understood. Earlier AI often worked behind the scenes, helping rank search results or filter unwanted messages. A conversational system put the technology in front of the user. Someone without programming knowledge could test it immediately on a letter, a difficult concept or a piece of computer code.

Large language models learn statistical relationships from their training material and use those relationships to generate responses. Describing that process as prediction is technically important, but it does not make its results trivial. Learning enough structure to predict language can produce useful abilities to summarize, translate and solve some problems. It also leaves a difficult gap between sounding reasonable and being correct.

By 2026, the category had expanded well beyond text chat. Systems could work with images, speech and other inputs. Some could use external tools to retrieve information or take actions. 13 An AI agent generally combines a model with software, permissions and a process for pursuing a goal across multiple steps.

That can make an assistant much more useful. It also changes the consequences of failure. A mistaken paragraph can be edited. A mistaken purchase, deleted file or message sent to the wrong person may require much more effort to undo. The importance of approval, limited permissions and clear records grows as systems gain the ability to act. 14

Adoption figures show how quickly the public encounter has spread. In a Pew Research Center survey conducted in February 2026, 49 percent of U.S. adults said they had used an AI chatbot, and 24 percent said they used one daily. Among employed adults, 38 percent reported using chatbots for work. These are self-reported American figures, rather than a census of the world, but they describe a technology that has moved well beyond a specialist audience. 15

Use and dependable value still need to be measured separately. A task may become faster while requiring more verification. Another may improve because an inexperienced worker gains access to guidance. Some tasks remain easier to complete without AI. The useful question is what the system accomplishes under actual working conditions, including the time spent correcting it. 3

What the internet and Y2K really tell us

Comparisons with earlier technological upheavals can clarify the moment, provided the differences remain visible.

The internet is the stronger comparison for AI’s potential long-term importance. Its foundations developed over decades before the World Wide Web made connected information accessible to a broad public. Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web at CERN in 1989; CERN released the Web software into the public domain in 1993. The internet and the Web were related developments, not interchangeable inventions. 16

The internet lowered the cost of moving information and connecting people. AI may lower the cost of performing certain kinds of cognitive work on that information. An online library makes a book available; an AI system can help a reader understand it, compare its arguments and apply an idea to a new problem. That additional capability could be enormously valuable, even when a human remains responsible for the result.

The analogy also offers a warning about timing. Organizations need to redesign processes, train people and establish trust before a technology’s full effects appear. Large investment and genuine innovation can coexist with waste, exaggerated claims and failed businesses. AI’s importance does not guarantee that every product will succeed.

Y2K belongs in a different category. The year-2000 problem involved systems that stored years with two digits and could mishandle the change from 99 to 00, along with related date issues. It was a real, bounded technical risk with a deadline. Governments and businesses repaired software, tested systems and prepared contingencies.

The relatively uneventful rollover does not demonstrate that the concern was imaginary. A subsequent U.S. Government Accountability Office review credited extensive preparation and documented some actual failures. Nor can anyone establish precisely what would have happened had that work never been done. 17

Y2K teaches that prevention can make a serious problem look small afterward. There will be no single midnight after which we can declare its story finished.

Will it be “bigger than the internet”? The answer depends on what is being measured: economic output, daily habits, scientific discovery, employment or political power. AI could match or exceed the internet’s effect in particular areas. Declaring an overall winner now would turn an important possibility into a certainty the evidence cannot support.

The work that changes first

AI’s near-term influence will often arrive through changes to individual tasks. An accountant may spend less time preparing a first draft of an explanation. A designer may explore more alternatives. A programmer may delegate a well-defined piece of work while taking responsibility for architecture, testing and security.

That does not make the employment question comfortable. If a task takes fewer hours, a business might produce more with the same staff, reduce hiring or eliminate positions. Geography, training and bargaining power matter.

The International Labour Organization’s 2025 assessment estimated that roughly one in four workers worldwide was in an occupation with some exposure to generative AI. Its central distinction was between exposure and replacement: because most occupations contain tasks requiring human involvement, transformation was considered more likely than complete automation for most exposed jobs. That finding describes possible task changes, not a prediction that a quarter of jobs will disappear. 18

A particularly difficult issue is the beginning of a career. Otherwise, they may save time today while weakening tomorrow’s expertise.

The gains also depend on who can use the technology. A small company could obtain help with tasks that once required several specialists. A person with limited literacy or a disability could gain easier access to information and services. At the same time, expensive computing infrastructure and control of widely used platforms could concentrate power among a relatively small number of organizations.

Neither outcome follows automatically from the software. Prices, competition, public institutions and decisions inside workplaces will shape who receives the benefits.

The physical cost also deserves attention. AI runs in data centers that require electricity, cooling and expensive equipment. The International Energy Agency’s April 2026 outlook projected that electricity use by all data centers, including those serving purposes other than AI, could roughly double between 2025 and 2030. Efficiency gains matter, but growing demand can offset them. Local power supplies and infrastructure will influence how quickly the technology expands and who bears its costs. 19

Training nutrition and recovery

For people who train seriously, the appeal is easy to understand. A knowledgeable assistant available between coaching sessions could help organize a training log, explain a technique or notice a pattern worth discussing with a professional. Better access to guidance could help beginners and people who cannot afford frequent individual coaching.

Smartphone movement analysis and AI-guided exercise are already being studied. A 2026 study followed young adults through a 16-week AI-guided resistance-training program and reported improvements in strength and body composition. But it had no control group, and 146 of 216 participants completed it. The results do not establish that AI produced extra gains beyond the exercise itself or outperformed a good coach. 20

That distinction matters for bodybuilding. A program can look personalized because it uses someone’s age, weight and training goal while missing crucial information about their experience, pain or response to previous sessions. Camera feedback may help with practicing a movement. It cannot, by itself, establish that an injury will be prevented. A confident explanation should earn trust through sound evidence and useful results.

Recovery tools raise similar questions. A score assembled from selected measurements is an estimate, rather than a direct reading of whether every muscle and tendon is ready for another hard session. Sleep data may make patterns easier to notice, but the American Academy of Sleep Medicine cautions that 5 consumer sleep technology should not replace appropriate medical evaluation. A separate study with 194 Harvard physics students found greater immediate learning gains from a purpose-built AI tutor than from the comparison classroom lessons. Household members and visitors also have a stake in those arrangements.

Reliability has an economic dimension. Purchase price is only part of ownership. Maintenance, replacement parts, subscriptions, downtime and the time spent supervising the machine all affect its value. A friendly voice and lifelike appearance do not establish competence.

Even so, the potential is substantial. Their value will come from completing a manageable job reliably, rather than from appearing endlessly capable.

Over a longer horizon, perhaps three to ten years, improving reliability and lower costs could support deeper changes. A small business might offer services it previously lacked the staff to deliver. A teacher could prepare different practice material for individual students.
