It may leave you wondering why you don’t feel like yourself when your test results appear to be within the expected range.

That experience is more common than many people realize. According to a CDC study published in 2025, 76.4% (representing 194 million) of US adults reported 1 or more chronic conditions in 2023, and 51.4% (representing 130 million) of US adults reported two or more. With that many people living with ongoing health concerns, understanding what your lab results do and don’t reveal has never been more important.

Benjamin Lee, whose work focuses on health information and wellness, says part of the issue may come down to the difference between what is considered normal and what may be relevant to an individual’s circumstances.

Why “Normal” Doesn’t Always Mean You Feel Fine

Laboratory reference ranges are useful for identifying results that fall outside the expected range of a population. However, being within a reference range does not necessarily explain how someone feels or provide a complete picture of their overall health.

A result being “normal” does not automatically mean that it explains every symptom a person is experiencing. Symptoms, personal history, lifestyle, medications, age, and other biomarkers can all provide additional context when laboratory results are being considered.

That does not mean standard reference ranges are wrong. They serve an important purpose. Rather, they are one part of a larger picture.

All Tests Normal But Still Sick: Look at the Bigger Picture

Thyroid testing provides one example of why looking beyond a single number can sometimes be useful.

A TSH level of 4.0 may fall within the reference range used by a particular laboratory. However, some practitioners who focus on health optimization may consider narrower target ranges when evaluating thyroid function, particularly when symptoms are also present.

The same concept can apply to other biomarkers.

For example, testosterone around 350 ng/dL may fall within a commonly used adult reference range, while whether that level is appropriate for an individual depends on factors such as age, symptoms, other hormone measurements, and personal health history.

Vitamin D provides another example. A result around 30 ng/mL may meet certain definitions of sufficiency, while some practitioners may consider different target levels depending on the individual’s circumstances.

These examples do not establish universal definitions of “optimal” health. Reference ranges and clinical targets can vary by laboratory, test, practitioner, and individual. The broader point is that a single number rarely provides the full context.

Thyroid Levels Normal But Symptoms Persist

Thyroid health also illustrates why symptoms and multiple laboratory markers may need to be considered together.

TSH is commonly used to evaluate thyroid function, but a more comprehensive assessment may include Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid antibodies such as TPO and TG antibodies. In some situations, practitioners may also consider Reverse T3 alongside other information.

This can be particularly relevant when someone experiences symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss, sensitivity to cold, weight changes, or mood changes. Those symptoms can have many possible causes, so looking at the broader picture may help identify what questions are worth exploring.

This can be particularly relevant when someone experiences symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss, sensitivity to cold, weight changes, or mood changes. Because these symptoms can have many possible causes, they should not automatically be attributed to thyroid function. Instead, they can be part of a broader conversation with a qualified healthcare professional.

A Six-Month Health Crisis Changed the Perspective

The importance of understanding your own health information became particularly personal during a six-month health crisis experienced by Benjamin Lee.

Following the extraction of two impacted wisdom teeth, severe jaw pain was initially suspected to be related to dry sockets. The situation eventually became much more serious. Diverticulitis led to partial colectomy surgery, followed by three separate small bowel obstructions that required an NG tube to relieve pressure.

The experience was particularly unexpected because, before the crisis, he maintained approximately 7% body fat year-round at around 205–210 pounds and had spent decades focused on wellness. He also had four physicians in his immediate family, an established medical team, and considerably more access to health information than most people.

Yet he still found himself struggling to advocate for himself.

That experience prompted a difficult question: if someone with extensive health knowledge and significant resources could find it challenging to navigate a complicated health situation, how difficult must it be for someone with little familiarity with medical terminology or laboratory testing?

The experience later influenced his work with 4BPM and LEAP, where he focuses on helping people better understand health information.

What You Can Take Away

The lesson isn’t that everyone needs to chase narrower laboratory ranges or assume that something has been missed.

Searching online can be a useful starting point, but information found online should not replace professional medical advice. Instead, it can help people prepare for a more informed conversation with their healthcare provider.

If you continue to feel unwell despite being told that your results are normal, consider asking:

What does each result actually measure?

How does my result compare with my previous results?

Could there be other explanations for what I’m experiencing?

Would additional testing provide useful information?

What should I monitor over time?

What does “normal” mean for this particular test?

Most importantly, don’t treat an “optimal range” found online as a diagnosis or a universal standard. Laboratory results should always be understood in the context of the individual and their overall circumstances.

Benjamin Lee’s experience illustrates why understanding health information can be valuable, particularly when symptoms and laboratory results don’t seem to tell the same story. Knowing what your results measure, what they don’t tell you, and which questions to ask can help you have more informed conversations about your health.

M&F and editorial staff were not involved in the creation of this content.

Source link

Being told that your blood work is “normal” can be reassuring, unless you still feel terrible.
