Then professionalism ushered in the era of franchise rugby, with players from traditional unions being consolidated into powerful Super Rugby teams.

In 2021, South Africa’s four professional franchises entered the United Rugby Championship (formerly Pro 14), creating a competition that has arguably proved particularly suitable for South African rugby – not least because of the relatively compatible time zones and playing conditions, but also the commercial benefits.

The consequence, however, has been difficult for the traditional provincial game.

*Also read: Steyn rings changes for Cheetahs following opening win

The Currie Cup has increasingly become the stepchild of South African professional rugby and, in many respects, of the sponsorship market.

That does not mean South Africans have stopped caring about the Currie Cup; far from it. The competition remains deeply embedded in the country’s rugby culture, but supporters are also spoilt for choice.

They have the Rugby Championship, international Test rugby, the EPCR Champions and Challenge Cup, the URC and the various professional franchise competitions.

Against that backdrop, it has become increasingly difficult for a purely domestic provincial competition to command the same commercial attention it once enjoyed.

And the numbers tell their own story.

There was a time when a regular Currie Cup fixture could attract crowds of 35,000 or 40,000 spectators. Today, many matches struggle to attract 8,000.

That is not necessarily a reflection of the quality of the players or the importance of provincial rugby. It is a reflection of how dramatically the rugby landscape has changed.

Could international flavour provide the answer?

Perhaps the solution is not to replace the Currie Cup or the NPC but to connect them.

Imagine a competition in which the Currie Cup and New Zealand’s NPC remain intact as separate tournaments, but their best-performing teams qualify for a new cross-border competition at the conclusion of their respective seasons.

A competition built around the history, rivalry and rugby cultures of South Africa and New Zealand.

The Southern Giants Challenge Cup

The concept could be relatively simple – the Currie Cup and NPC continue in their existing formats.

Once both competitions are completed, the finalists – or perhaps the highest-ranked qualifying teams – enter a new four-team knockout competition.

For example:

Semifinal One:
Currie Cup No. 1 v NPC No. 2 – Hosted in South Africa

Semifinal Two:
NPC No. 1 vs Currie Cup No. 2 – Hosted in New Zealand

The winners then meet in a neutral-venue Final, creating an opportunity to take the competition beyond its traditional markets.

Japan immediately springs to mind as one potential destination.

Imagine, for example, a scenario in which Griquas host Auckland in Kimberley, while the Pumas travel to New Zealand to face North Harbour.

Obviously, there would have to be rules governing the competition, such as ensuring that no player contracted to a URC or Super Rugby team would be eligible to play in the semifinals or final of the combined cup competition.

The winners could then meet at a neutral international venue – perhaps in Japan – for the inaugural Southern Giants Challenge Cup.

Suddenly, a provincial competition that traditionally struggles for international attention has a genuine cross-border narrative.

And that could have significant commercial implications.

A new sponsorship proposition

For sponsors, the attraction would not necessarily be another domestic tournament.

It would be a South Africa–New Zealand rugby property built around two of the world’s great provincial rugby traditions.

The competition could offer sponsors exposure across:

South Africa

New Zealand

International rugby audiences

Travelling supporters

Digital and social-media platforms

International broadcast markets

Emerging rugby markets such as Japan

It could also create additional commercial opportunities for the smaller unions.

A union such as Griquas, the Pumas, North Harbour or another provincial side could suddenly find itself involved in an international competition with genuine overseas exposure that matters.

The smaller unions need more than tradition to remain commercially sustainable; they need meaningful fixtures, compelling narratives, broadcast value and reasons for sponsors to associate themselves with their brands.

A cross-border competition could potentially provide all four.

And what about New Zealand?

There is another interesting dimension to this proposal.

South Africa’s departure from Super Rugby fundamentally changed the competition.

For years, South African teams provided a different physical and tactical challenge to their New Zealand counterparts.

While South African teams did not dominate the competition — winning three Super Rugby titles during the 25-year professional era — their presence contributed significantly to the character of the tournament.

New Zealand rugby supporters may not always acknowledge how important that South African opposition was, but the rivalry produced some of the most compelling rugby of the professional era.

There have also been ongoing discussions and debate within New Zealand rugby about the future structure of professional provincial/franchise rugby and whether the existing model remains sustainable.

Whatever ultimately happens, one thing is clear: the relationship between South African and New Zealand rugby remains commercially and competitively significant.

A new cross-border provincial competition could tap into that history without requiring the two countries to completely restructure their existing domestic competitions.

South African rugby has never been stronger

There is also a fascinating contrast.

While the Currie Cup has struggled for attention, the Springbok brand has become one of the most powerful properties in world rugby, particularly since 2019.

South Africa’s international success has created enormous global visibility for the game.

Back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles.

Back-to-back Rugby Championships.

Back-to-back British & Irish Lions series victories.

Back-to-back Junior World Championship titles.

Back-to-back HSBC SVNS World Championship winners.

Springboks winning eight out of the last 10 clashes against New Zealand.

A professional rugby system producing talent across schools, universities, provincial rugby and the professional franchises.

South Africa’s schoolboy rugby system remains a major talent pipeline, while university rugby continues to play an important developmental role.

The irony is that the country possesses one of the strongest rugby brands in the world, yet one of its most historic competitions continues to struggle for spectators and sponsors. That is the commercial opportunity.

Tradition meets internationalisation

The answer may not be to abandon the Currie Cup, but quite the opposite.

Perhaps the answer is to give the Currie Cup another reason for the international rugby public to watch it.

Keep the history and the provincial rivalries.

Keep the Currie Cup and the NPC, but then give their best teams something bigger to play for.

The Southern Giants Challenge Cup could become a bridge between two of the world’s great provincial rugby traditions — South Africa and New Zealand.

It would not replace the Currie Cup or the NPC.

It would give them a second life beyond their respective borders.

And perhaps, in an increasingly global professional rugby environment, that is exactly what these historic competitions need.

Because sometimes preserving tradition does not mean keeping everything exactly as it was.

Sometimes, it means finding a new way to make that tradition matter again.

The URC was one of the best things that ever happened to South Africa’s Super Rugby franchises, and the move north has given South African rugby the best of both worlds.

South Africa’s relationship with the URC is in a healthy place, but there should be no reason to extend a hand to New Zealand through the Currie Cup.

Source link

OPINION: Is there a commercial and sponsorship future for the Currie Cup and New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship – and could the answer lie in bringing the two historic provincial competitions together?
