Here's what we know\"\/>\n<ul class=\"gnt_sh\">\n<li class=\"gnt_sh_li\">Advocate Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted in 2002 at the age of 14, has launched a new podcast, &#8220;The Survival Files.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_sh_li\">Smart, now 38, tells USA TODAY in an interview that she won&#8217;t be defined by her abduction or stopped &#8220;from experiencing things that I wanted to experience because of the nightmares of my past.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"gnt_sh_li\">Smart also speaks about entering bodybuilding competitions, which provided &#8220;a new appreciation&#8221; for her physique. &#8220;I&#8217;m alive because of my body, and I want to take the best care of it I can.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The day prior to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2026\/05\/08\/savannah-nancy-guthrie-missing-mom-elizabeth-smart-kidnapping\/89992548007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Elizabeth Smart<\/a>\u2019s kidnapping had been \u201ca good day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">With her time in junior high dwindling, Smart tells USA TODAY she started training on June 4, 2002 for the high school\u2019s track and cross-country team. Smart, then 14, ran with her younger sister, Mary Katherine, 9 at the time, because her mother Lois Smart said she couldn\u2019t go alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Later, the sisters, their four other siblings and parents gathered around the kitchen table for dinner before rushing to Smart&#8217;s awards assembly. They arrived too late for Smart to play the harp as planned \u2212 \u201cMoving an instrument that big is not that much fun, so I don&#8217;t think my parents were too thrilled with me over that,&#8221; Smart quips \u2212 and later returned to their ritzy Salt Lake City home in Federal Heights.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Nestled in the bed that she shared with sister Mary Katherine that night, Smart read \u201cElla Enchanted\u201d aloud, and at each chapter\u2019s end, her younger sibling begged her to keep going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I read till midnight or a little bit later,&#8221; Smart says. &#8220;I remember looking over at her, and she was asleep, and I remember just thinking, &#8216;Well, that&#8217;s great.&#8217; Tomorrow night&#8217;s going to come, and she&#8217;s going to say, &#8216;Wait, I fell asleep. Go back and read that last chapter.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:404px\" fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/09\/28\/USAT\/91984066007-getty-images-1849680.jpg?width=300&amp;height=404&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/09\/28\/USAT\/91984066007-getty-images-1849680.jpg?width=600&amp;height=808&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Elizabeth Smart's parents, Lois Smart, left, and Ed Smart, celebrate their daughter Elizabeth's return with &quot;America's Most Wanted&quot; host John Walsh on March 14, 2003 in Salt Lake City, Utah.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But far more sinister trouble lay on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Brian David Mitchell, previously hired to do some work on the family\u2019s home, abducted Smart at knifepoint, leading the teen to a campsite where his wife and accomplice, Wanda Barzee, waited. Smart, who says she and Mitchell never spoke prior to her kidnapping, was held captive, abused and sexually assaulted multiple times a day, every day, until her rescue nine months later on March 12, 2003.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While held against her will, Smart says it was \u201ca conscious thought every day\u201d to persevere. \u201cIt was just doing whatever I had to do to survive. And it didn&#8217;t matter what it was. If it meant that I&#8217;d survive, then I was going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In more than 20 years since, Smart, now 38, has become an activist and started an eponymous foundation to fight for change and provide education. In August, she launched a true-crime podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheartmedia.com\/press\/iheartpodcasts-and-marwar-junction-productions-launch-survivor-files-elizabeth-smart-new-true\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">\u201cThe Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart,\u201d<\/a> (weekly Mondays, where podcasts are available and on the iHeartRadio app), in which she interviews those who have endured various harrowing circumstances. And in April, Smart shared that she\u2019s taken an interest in body building competitions.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While Smart acknowledges that her abduction was life-changing, she says it was not life-defining, and she\u2019d like to be known as \u201cmore than just a kidnapping survivor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cGrowing up, my parents always emphasized if you borrow something or you stay somewhere, you should leave it better than [how] you found it,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Ultimately that&#8217;s what I would want to be known or remembered [for] \u2212 that the world, or at least my tiny corner of it, was better for having me in it than not.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_ig\" aria-label=\"Instagram Embed\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadInstagram\" data-v-src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Db4MtYQRtHR\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=12&amp;wp=1116&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com\" style=\"max-width:540px;min-height:940px\"><a class=\"gnt_em_ig_bl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Db4MtYQRtHR\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" aria-label=\"view Instagram post: \"><svg class=\"gnt_em_ig_bl_svg\"><use xlink:href=\"#gnt_svg_instagram\"\/><\/svg><\/a><\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Elizabeth Smart\u2019s new podcast is shaped by her previously being &#8216;blindsided&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Smart says <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/6mF1yISbZZi0FLYndcV1qW\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">\u201cThe Survival Files\u201d<\/a> highlights traumatic experiences of her guests \u201cin an ethical way,&#8221; where &#8220;the survivors themselves are the ones sharing what they feel comfortable sharing and really taking ownership of their story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">That was an intentional choice by Smart, who says she&#8217;s previously been subject to bait and switch interviews and has had her story misrepresented.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI certainly have been blindsided in interviews before where I was there to speak about one thing, and then they didn&#8217;t ever even touch on it, and they just went down a completely different path,\u201d she explains, mentioning an instance where a tabloid that twisted her testimony about the presence of alcohol and marijuana during her captivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI went to the grocery store the next day with my mom,\u201d Smart recalls. &#8220;[There&#8217;s] a big headline saying, \u2018Elizabeth Smart admits she&#8217;s a druggie.\u2019 And I definitely never said that \u2026 where so many survivors aren&#8217;t the ones sharing their own stories, it felt like a very needed platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:376px\" fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/09\/28\/USAT\/91984065007-es-podcast-1.png?width=660&amp;height=376&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/09\/28\/USAT\/91984065007-es-podcast-1.png?width=1320&amp;height=752&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Advocate Elizabeth Smart hosts a new podcast, &quot;The Survivor Files,&quot; which releases new episodes on Monday.\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Bodybuilding allowed Elizabeth Smart to discover &#8216;a new appreciation&#8217; for her body<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2026\/05\/04\/elizabeth-smart-bodybuilding\/89930273007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Bodybuilding<\/a> is one of the interests Smart has allowed herself to explore after marathon running began \u201ctaking a toll on me.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2026\/04\/22\/elizabeth-smart-bodybuilding-transformation\/89729143007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">In April, she shared photos<\/a> from her fourth competition on Instagram, showcasing her muscular physique in a bikini, admitting she was \u201ctoo afraid to post\u201d previous efforts because of her fears of being judged or ridiculed.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Smart says the reaction to her post \u201cblew my mind,\u201d especially since it received \u201cmore attention\u201d than her 2025 book \u201cDetours: Hope &amp; Growth After Life\u2019s Hardest Turns\u201d and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/tv\/2026\/01\/21\/elizabeth-smart-kidnapping-netflix-documentary\/88283581007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">January\u2019s \u201cKidnapped: Elizabeth Smart\u201d documentary<\/a>, streaming now on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI thought a few people would have something to say,&#8221; But I feel like in the world of victims and survivors, a lot of us look at our bodies and be like, \u2018Well, if I hadn&#8217;t been pretty, this wouldn&#8217;t have happened to me,\u2019 or \u2018If my body didn&#8217;t look this way,\u2019 or \u2018If I hadn&#8217;t been dressed this way,\u2019\u201d Smart explains. \u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of going back over every detail in excruciating pain to figure out if you could have done something different or what caused it to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAs I really got into the process, I feel like, in some way, it did give me a new appreciation for my body,&#8221; she adds. &#8220;I also felt like it gave me a freedom about my body. Why should I be ashamed of my body? My body&#8217;s beautiful. Look at what it&#8217;s done. My body deserves to be celebrated. I don&#8217;t want to feel like I never did all of the things that I want to do, and I stopped myself from experiencing things that I wanted to experience because of the nightmares of my past,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2026\/09\/06\/elizabeth-smart-bodybuilding-competition-loss\/91644022007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Smart has since traveled to Pittsburgh to compete in the NPC North American Championships<\/a> in early September. And though she \u201cplaced at the bottom\u201d of two classes, according to her Sept. 5 Instagram post, Smart couldn&#8217;t be prouder.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_x__c gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI\u2019ve always said \u2018just stepping on stage is a win for me!\u2019 And I completely stand by that,\u201d she captioned her post. \u201cI brought a better physique and stage presence than at my previous shows, and I\u2019m so proud of myself for the hard work, discipline, and bravery it takes me to compete.
