On Friday night the British bodybuilder beat defending champion Ramon Dino, two-time runner-up <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/mike-sommerfeld\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"mike-sommerfeld\">Mike Sommerfeld<\/a> and Arnold Classic winner <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/wesley-vissers\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"wesley-vissers\">Wesley Vissers<\/a> to take the 2026 Classic Physique Olympia.<\/p>\n<p>Even we didn\u2019t see it coming. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/2026-mr-olympia-predictions\/\">2026 Olympia predictions<\/a> had him fourth, behind Dino, Sommerfeld and Vissers, and our <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/2026-olympia-records\/\">records preview<\/a> built its Classic section around those three and <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/terrence-ruffin\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"terrence-ruffin\">Terrence Ruffin<\/a>. Darwen won the <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/2026-new-york-pro-results\/\">New York Pro<\/a> on May 8 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/2026-pittsburgh-pro-results\/\">Pittsburgh Pro<\/a> eight days later, two of the biggest shows on the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>The headlines went elsewhere. Vissers won the Arnold Classic, Sommerfeld won the Arnold Classic UK, and Dino was the defending champion. Darwen kept winning and kept being described as a contender.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"friday-night-not-as-close-as-an-upset-sounds\">Friday night: not as close as an upset sounds<\/h2>\n<p>The first sign came at Friday\u2019s prejudging, when he stood in the middle of the final callout, the spot that usually goes to the man who is winning. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/2026-classic-physique-olympia-prejudging-report\/\">prejudging report<\/a> called it a shock. By the finals the judges were running the top five through round after round, and then they called his name.<\/p>\n<p>What set him apart was size. Our results desk called his physique an imposing presence onstage, and Dino, who brought more conditioning than last year, had no answer for it. Sommerfeld finished second for a third straight year. Dino dropped to third. Vissers took fourth, the best Olympia finish of his career. In his victory speech he credited Dino, Sommerfeld, Vissers and Ruffin by name.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-first-for-classic-physique\">A first for Classic Physique<\/h2>\n<p>Darwen is only the fifth man to win the Classic Physique Olympia, after <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/danny-hester\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"danny-hester\">Danny Hester<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/breon-ansley\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"breon-ansley\">Breon Ansley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/chris-bumstead\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"chris-bumstead\">Chris Bumstead<\/a> and Dino. He is also the first from outside the Americas: Hester and Ansley are American, Bumstead is Canadian and Dino is Brazilian.<\/p>\n<p>And he is the first British champion in a division that has turned into the most popular men\u2019s class of the weekend. He could have company by Sunday. <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/samson-dauda\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"samson-dauda\">Samson Dauda<\/a> goes after the Sandow on Saturday night and <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/bodybuilding\/athletes\/ryan-terry\/\" class=\"bb-athlete-link\" data-athlete-slug=\"ryan-terry\">Ryan Terry<\/a> chases a fourth Men\u2019s Physique title, and if both land, Britain leaves Las Vegas holding three Olympia titles.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"now-everyone-chases-him\">Now everyone chases him<\/h2>\n<p>The hard part of Classic Physique has never been winning one. It is winning two. Only Ansley and Bumstead have done it, and Dino just found out how hard it is.<\/p>\n<p>Darwen goes into 2027 as the man everyone is measuring against. Sommerfeld has spent three years one place short, and Vissers has never been closer. Two years ago none of them needed to know where Niall Darwen was standing in the lineup.
