{"id":29851,"date":"2026-09-24T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=29851"},"modified":"2026-09-24T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T23:00:00","slug":"working-part-time-to-fund-his-dream-singaporean-18-breaks-powerlifting-world-record-with-273kg-deadlift-singapore-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=29851","title":{"rendered":"Working part-time to fund his dream, Singaporean, 18, breaks powerlifting world record with 273kg deadlift, Singapore News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Muhammad Hazrul Abdul Malik balanced polytechnic studies, gruelling training sessions and a part-time job to fund his powerlifting dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Aug 21, the 18-year-old Singaporean achieved the biggest lift of his career, breaking the world record with a 273kg deadlift at the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Sub-Junior &amp; Junior Powerlifting Championships 2026 in Sun City, South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The previous world record stood at 271kg.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammad Hazrul, a second-year Temasek Polytechnic student studying Architectural Technology and Building Services, also finished second overall in his category with a total lift of 613kg \u2014 comprising a 220kg squat, 120kg bench press and 273kg deadlift.<\/p>\n<p>The record-breaking performance, however, came after a difficult start to the competition.<\/p>\n<p>One of his squat attempts was disqualified because he did not squat low enough, while he suffered severe cramps in his calves and arms during warm-up, Berita Harian (BH) reported.<\/p>\n<p>After his opening 260kg deadlift attempt, Muhammad Hazrul also vomited.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the setbacks, he returned for his final attempt and triumphantly lifted 273kg, surpassing the previous world-record mark.<\/p>\n<h2>Football disappointment sparked his powerlifting journey<\/h2>\n<p>The resilience that carried Muhammad Hazrul through those challenges was forged years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>His powerlifting journey began in 2022, after he failed to make his secondary school&#8217;s football team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He later started training at a gym, where a senior spotted him lifting weights and introduced him to his coach.<\/p>\n<p>He began competing in powerlifting in 2024, winning his first local competition before finishing second at the Singapore National Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammad Hazrul later represented Singapore at the Asian championships, where he finished sixth overall and won gold in the deadlift.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, he finished second again at the 2025 Singapore National Championships. This time, he lost to an athlete he had previously trained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although I felt proud to see my student succeed, the defeat at the same time motivated me to continue training and become stronger,&#8221; he told BH.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old polytechnic student also works part-time at Anytime Fitness to help cover his training and competition expenses.\u00a0<meta content=\"text\/html; charset=us-ascii\" http-equiv=\"Content-Type\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although my mother has always offered to cover the expenses of the sport, I often turn her down,&#8221; he was quoted as saying by BH.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This effort is not just about training at the gym.
