Cameron Wass works as a lifeguard at Haven in <a aria-label=\"CleethorpesLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk\/all-about\/cleethorpes\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Cleethorpes<\/a> but the next few days will see him not poolside but in the spotlight of the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Winnipeg, Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Eighteen-year-old Cameron, who has just passed his driving test, is seeing a test of a very different kind on Sunday (September 20) when he steps up in the u66kg weight class, sub-junior age category, for classic full power &#8211; the full three-lift disciplines of squat, bench press and deadlift (SBD) performed in classic (raw) lifting, which allows a belt, sleeves, and wrist wraps, but not supportive suits or shirts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Cameron, who lives in Cleehtorpes, said he was both excited and nervous to be representing his country. \u201cIt\u2019s an honour being in the England team,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Grimsby-born Cameron was studying at college for his Level 2 in Sport when he found he could handle big weights and was \u201cquite strong\u201d for his age. \u201cA personal coach reached out to me and I hired him,\u201d Cameron said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The teenager stepped onto the competitive platform for his very first event in February this year, at the South Midlands Divisional Powerlifting competition. Demonstrating his total commitment to the sport, Cameron is even using his 18th birthday savings to help fund the trip to Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">His proud mum, Amanda Wass, is travelling with Cameron. \u201cI\u2019m with him every step of the way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI am blown away by his dedication. He is completely invested in every way and he is so strict with his training and so passionate about it.
