There’s the boxing, the travel, the outfits, the humor, the confidence, and, yes, the physique. But the more you talk to Kirkman, the clearer it becomes that what you see online isn’t a carefully constructed version of who she is. It’s pretty much the point.

For someone who grew up in front of cameras, authenticity hasn’t always come naturally. Kirkman spent her childhood in the public eye on Nickelodeon, then had to figure out who she was when the cameras stopped rolling. Years later, she’s back in front of an audience, this time on her own terms, and with millions of people able to scroll into her life at any given moment.

That comes with its own set of pressures. Kirkman has spent years working through confidence, self-love, and the temptation to shrink herself after once being so publicly visible.

“I think I’ve gone through so many phases of finding my identity and self-love and confidence, as we all do,” she tells Muscle & Fitness. “I think I maybe had to come to terms with a lot of those things earlier than most people, because I was public-facing at a younger age.”

When she came home from filming as a kid and tried to fold herself back into a normal life, there was no roadmap for it.

“There really is no handbook on how to deal with this stuff, especially when you’re 10,” she says. “I started to think that being entertaining and taking up space no longer felt safe for me, and I turned into a bit of a shell of a person for many years.”

It took moving across the country alone, cycling through different friend groups, and a lot of reflection before she landed on the thing that had actually been true the whole time: she loves to entertain, and that was never limited to a TV set.

“I woke up one day, and I said, ‘ What is it that I love about acting that I’m willing to sacrifice so many things for a job I don’t have? And I realized it had boiled down to, I just love entertaining,” she says. “That was a really freeing moment for me, because it made me realize that’s not limited. I can do that every day.”

Movement has always been part of Kirkman’s identity. She was a competitive gymnast as a kid, which she credits with teaching her discipline and how to deal with scrutiny at an early age. But once it became clear gymnastics wasn’t going to turn into an Olympic career, she spent years chasing that same feeling through hockey, track, cheerleading, and eventually martial arts.

“I never wanted my workout to feel like a chore,” she says. “I’ve always loved activities that were fun first, and the benefit was staying mentally sharp and physically strong.”

She took her first boxing class around 18, but it wasn’t until she moved back to Los Angeles and was working the front desk at Equinox alongside a handful of other service jobs that she really committed. She put her paycheck toward private lessons, tried Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, and karate, and eventually landed on boxing for good.

“That sport continues to this day to change my life, because it’s a sport you can do for 15 years, and every day you get humbled,” she says. “When I show up to that class, I am actually very present, and I’m not thinking about anything else other than not getting hit in the face.”

For someone whose mind she describes as “running 24/7,” that kind of forced presence was rare. She’d tried other workout classes and found herself mentally drafting her to-do list the entire time. Boxing was different, and it arrived at a moment when she needed it most.

“I also started doing martial arts when I was in a very toxic relationship, and I wasn’t very confident,” she says. “Over time, that sport slowly helped me build confidence and independence. I always say it’s changed my life and saved my life, and I’m grateful for it every day.”

Sparring Is High-Stakes Chess

More recently, Kirkman has taken the next step in her boxing journey by moving into sparring, something she admits is intimidating, particularly as a woman starting that phase of the sport in her 30s.

Christina Kirkman

“Where I’m at right now, boxing feels like high-stakes chess,” she says. “You start on a heavy bag, then you move to mitts, then you move to sparring, and all three are wildly different. You’re making changes in the moment.”

Every partner reveals something different about her own strengths and weaknesses, and she’s found the fastest way to grow is to seek out people who expose the gaps.

“I’m very fast and very nimble, and I attribute a lot of that to being a gymnast,” she says. “My ideal partner is obviously someone who’s not as comfortable on their feet,” she jokes. “But the only way I’m getting better is sparring with people who have the strengths I don’t.”

That vulnerability, she says, has been one of the more surprising gifts of the sport.

“I’m 33, and I just started sparring. That’s such an intimidating thing to start doing as a woman at 33, knowing you can get a black eye or knock a tooth out,” she says. “I’m really proud of myself for taking the risk and not being afraid of that. I just want to keep doing it for as long as I can.”

Therapy Isn’t Found on a Chaise Lounge

Kirkman doesn’t separate the physical benefits of boxing from the emotional ones. If anything, she says the emotional payoff has always come first.

“There have been days where I’m like, I cannot fucking get through this right now, and I go to boxing,” she says. “I’m able to let go of everything. It’s helped me a lot in how I regulate my emotions.”

That release matters more now than it once did, because Kirkman is candid that recovery, and rest more broadly, has never come naturally to her.

“I hate resting,” she says. “I’ve never known how to take a day off or remove myself from what I do and what I love. When I don’t rest, I get sick, I get burnt out, and I get hurt, and I try to remind myself of that as much as possible.”

Frequent travel has made consistency even harder, and she’s had to learn to be gentler with herself when her routine falls apart.

“I’ll have a week where I feel super consistent, I’m working out, I’m eating great, and then I find out I’m going on a trip and my whole schedule goes to shit,” she says. “I’ve had to learn to give myself grace. I used to get really mad at myself.”

Christina Kirkman

This is also the year she started therapy, which she says has helped her stop fearing rest in the first place. Her other tools are less clinical: IV drips before and after travel, time with her dogs, a wellness routine before bed, and, most of all, the ocean.

“I live close to the beach, and that has been a huge part of my recovery,” she says. “Anytime I feel sore, sick, depressed, whatever it is, I walk down to the beach. I go in the ocean. It almost instantly makes me feel better.”

The Parents Who Set the Tone

Kirkman traces a lot of her drive back to her mother, who had her at 19 and raised her while working and attending school full time.

“I think about that all the time. What a badass she was to be able to do that. Seeing that as a young girl definitely instilled the importance of independence.”

Her mother’s own relationship with movement left an impression, too.

“My mom always took care of herself. She was always super active; she always ate clean; she cooked every single meal at home,” she says. “Every time I call that woman now, she’s at the gym. She’ll say, ‘Can I call you back? I’m lifting.’ And I’m like, ‘Ma, you’ve been at the gym for two hours today.”

Kirkman describes her mom as a strict, no-nonsense “Carmela” type and credits that discipline for keeping her on a steady path through a childhood that could have easily tipped in a different direction.

“She laid down the law, and I think that’s also why I have so much discipline,” she says. “I never went against my mother, I never broke any rules, I never snuck out. At the time, it was annoying, but I look back now, and I’m very grateful.”

Both of her parents, she adds, encouraged her to try everything as a kid, which is a large part of why she found her footing so early.

“My parents always championed my interests and let me try everything I was interested in, to help figure out what I liked,” she says. “That’s what I’m so grateful for. I was able to learn my purpose and my interests at a very young age.”

Health Beyond the Physique

Kirkman’s approach to health has shifted since entering her 30s, less about chasing a new goal and more about longevity and actually listening to her body.

“In your 20s, there’s a little bit of ‘I’m untouchable, nothing’s going to happen to me,” she says. “Once I entered my 30s, I started asking questions about longevity, having kids, and taking care of myself.”

Part of that shift is thinking ahead to a family of her own one day, something she connects directly back to her own upbringing.

“My mom had me very young, and both my parents were super active. They’d swim with me, we’d go snowboarding,” she says. “I want to keep moving my body so I can keep up with my kids.”

The bigger lesson, though, has been about the connection between mental and physical health, one she learned the hard way.

“I didn’t realize how detrimental stress was until later. I think stress is the most harmful thing for your body, above all the other foods and whatever it may be,” she says. “I started actually seeing the effects of my mental health in physical ailments. I had chronic hives; I had high histamine in my body from chronic stress.

That’s when I said, all right, I need to take care of what’s going on up here, or none of what I’m doing physically is going to matter.”

Her takeaway is blunt but hard-earned: “If you don’t learn how to regulate your stress or your emotions, that takes a lot bigger toll on you physically than anything else.”

Fueling the Machine

When it comes to supplements, Kirkman says she researches products rather than blindly following trends and tries not to overload her system with too much at once.

“I don’t buy into every health fad. I do research about something, and if it seems like it would work with my body, I give it a shot,” she says. NAD has been the one that surprised her most: “I thought it was a crock of shit. It’s drastically changed my life. My bounce-back time is so much smaller, so I’m able to work at the pace I’m at, which is constantly go, go, go.”

She’s also a fan of Promix, from its electrolyte packets to its protein, Omega-3, pre-bed magnesium, and muscle recovery blend, and Cymbiotika’s glutathione, vitamin C, and NAD. Still, she comes back to a much simpler foundation.

“As old-school as it is, the best thing for you is moving your body, resting, and eating,” she says. “We try to find how we can avoid all three and find the cheat, but at the end of the day, those three things are the most important.”

Confidence Isn’t a Finish Line

That same philosophy extends beyond fitness, and it’s the thread that runs through everything else Kirkman has learned about herself.

“I always say confidence has a really bad PR team,” she says. “Everybody, especially women in their early 20s, is fed this idea that confidence is something you obtain and then you have it for life, like you unlock a level in a video game and carry it with you forever. It’s a crock of bullshit. Confidence is not linear. It’s not something you obtain, and then you’re all good.”

For Kirkman, real confidence means being able to have an imperfect day without letting it stop her from living.

“It’s not being able to wake up every day and look in the mirror and say, I’m successful, I’m confident, life is great,” she says. “It’s being able to look in the mirror and say, I feel like a piece of shit today, and still going on with your life.”

She believes it starts with showing up as herself and paying attention to what and who stick around because of it.

“When you do things completely as yourself, the things that are meant for you will fall into your life,” she says. “I spent so much time trying to be something else, as a way to dim my light. Once I gave myself permission to just show up as myself, it gave me so much more peace.”

Christina Kirkman

A Different Kind of Fitness Interview

By the end of the conversation, Kirkman admitted something that stuck with us: in more than a decade of talking publicly about her body, her workouts, and her image, she’d never actually done an interview like this one.

“I think the reason I’ve always been a little wary about talking about my fitness journey is because people see my physique now and they’re like, what do you do, what do you eat,” she says. “I’ve been active my whole life. I was a competitive gymnast at 10. I’ve just found workouts that help me maintain that. What it does aesthetically has always been an added benefit, not the point.”

That’s exactly why the conversation went where it did, into recovery, therapy, family, and the ordinary, unglamorous work of regulating her emotions instead of another rundown of macros and workout splits.

“It’s been a good workout for me, no pun intended,” she says. “I’ve never had an interview that positioned it in that light. I learned a lot about myself in this.”

The common thread through all of it is authenticity. Kirkman doesn’t want fitness to be another performance. After spending her childhood performing for an audience, she’s found something liberating in choosing activities because they make her feel strong, present, and alive.

And perhaps that’s the most important part of her fitness philosophy: You don’t have to love working out.

Source link

Scroll through Christina Kirkman’s social feed, and it’s easy to think she has life figured out.
