Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships brought her into the spotlight after she lifted 140kg in the deadlift to win a silver medal for India.<!-- --> But the 21-year-old athlete has now revealed that the attention following her achievement has also brought a deeply disturbing side of social media- including online sexual harassment, impersonation and thousands of AI-generated images made using her face and body.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"3\"\/>Banerji, who competes in the junior women\u2019s 47kg category, spoke about her experience through her Instagram Stories.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"5\"\/>\u201cI recently won a deadlift silver medal at IPF Jr Worlds for India and while I appreciate the support and recognition, as an Indian female athlete I&#8217;ve also had to deal with,\u201d she wrote, listing sexual harassment online, accounts impersonating her and \u201cdisturbing conversations surrounding my ethnicity, ancestry and caste\u201d.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>She said the most distressing part had been the circulation of manipulated images created using artificial intelligence. \u201cAnd the worst- thousands of AI generated images of me with pictures of my body and face morphed and edited in very disturbing ways,\u201d Banerji wrote.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/>She said the scale of the abuse had made the experience particularly unsettling. \u201cIt\u2019s quite unnerving to be waking up everyday to my feed (and the feeds of every single person I know) flooded with these fake AI pictures,\u201d she said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10; Junior Classic Powerlifting Championships.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"16\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>\u2018I never posted pictures on it\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Banerji said the situation was particularly difficult because she had always preferred to keep her personal life away from social media. \u201cI&#8217;ve always been a private person and if you&#8217;ve known me in any capacity \/ followed my old account you&#8217;d know I never posted pictures on it either!\u201d she wrote.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>According to Banerji, her old Instagram account was also suspended. She described it as a private account with around 300 followers and said the experience left her feeling that she had little choice but to create a new public account. <!-- -->She added she wanted to ensure that she had some control over how her achievement and identity were being represented online. \u201cI didn&#8217;t want to make it public but I&#8217;m left with no choice if I want to have a say in a narrative about my own sport and accomplishment and stand up for myself without getting my account suspended again!\u201d she wrote.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>\u2018The purpose of my sport in my life is just to challenge myself\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Amid the sudden attention, Banerji stressed that her motivation for powerlifting had never been fame or social media visibility. <!-- -->\u201cThe purpose of my sport in my life is just to challenge myself in a fun way and I&#8217;m grateful to be competing at the level that I am,\u201d she said.
