In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor revealed that his current routine includes “a lot of powerlifting,” although his training keeps changing depending on what he is trying to achieve. Hooda also said he likes to balance intense training with something much simpler: walking. This combination highlights an important fitness principle: strength training and low-intensity movement serve different purposes, and both can have a place in a well-rounded routine. “Randeep Hooda’s fitness regime is said to involve powerlifting and walking, two exercises that seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. One is supposed to deliver great force for a short period . The other is something people are supposed to endure for hours . But physiologically, this is precisely why the combo makes sense. I have a different perspective on fitness as a rehabilitation physician. It’s not just the amount of muscle you have but the amount of physical capacity your body is able to sustain and utilise. Powerlifting trains the neurological system too,” says Dr. Nitish Dhiman, Assistant Professor and Consultant, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad. “Heavy resistance training builds more than muscle. When we lift the brain and spinal cord learn to recruit motor units more efficiently. Muscles generate more force, tendons adapt to the load, and bones are mechanically signalled to maintain bone strength,” Dr Dhiman adds.

What Does Powerlifting Do For The Body?

Powerlifting is centred around three major compound lifts: the squat, bench press and deadlift. These exercises involve multiple muscle groups and require considerable strength, coordination and technique. Regular resistance training can help build muscle strength, improve bone health and support functional movement. Stronger muscles can also make everyday activities such as lifting, carrying and climbing stairs easier. However, powerlifting is not simply about lifting as much weight as possible. Technique, training volume, recovery and gradual progression are important, particularly when working with heavy loads.

The older you get the more it matters. With age we not only lose muscle mass but muscle quality and strength as well. So my view of strength is as a kind of physiological reserve. The stronger the body, the more capacity to lose before normal tasks become hard. WHO recommendations: muscle-strengthening activities involving the major muscle groups on at least 2 days per week

Why Does Walking Matter If You Already Lift Weights?

Walking may appear simple compared with heavy strength training, but it offers a different type of physical benefit. “A good way to test the metabolic and cardiovascular systems without the neurological and mechanical exhaustion of heavy lifting is to walk briskly on a regular basis. Aerobic exercise enhances the body’s ability to deliver and utilise oxygen, improves insulin sensitivity, and increases whole-body energy expenditure over time.

Regular walking contributes to overall physical activity and can support cardiovascular fitness, mobility and energy expenditure. It is also relatively low impact and can often be incorporated into daily life without placing the same demands on the body as heavy lifting,” Dr Dhiman advises. For someone who trains intensely, walking can provide an opportunity to remain active on easier days without adding substantial training stress.

Strength And Cardio Don’t Have To Compete

One common misconception is that people have to choose between building muscle and improving cardiovascular fitness. In reality, a combination of resistance training and aerobic activity can provide broader health benefits. Strength training targets muscular strength and function, while activities such as brisk walking can contribute to cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

The ideal balance depends on the individual’s goals. Someone preparing for a strength competition will have different training requirements from someone exercising primarily for general health.

Walking Can Also Support Recovery

Easy walking can be useful on days when a person does not want to perform another demanding workout. It keeps the body moving without necessarily creating the same level of fatigue as heavy resistance training. For people who spend long hours sitting, adding regular walking throughout the day can also help reduce prolonged sedentary time.

However, walking should not be considered a replacement for structured strength training if the goal is to maintain or build muscle.

Why Recovery Is Important With Heavy Training

Powerlifting places significant demands on muscles, joints and the nervous system. Training hard every day without adequate recovery can increase fatigue and potentially affect performance. Rest days, adequate sleep, sufficient nutrition and appropriate training volume are therefore essential. Protein provides the amino acids required for muscle repair, while carbohydrates can help replenish glycogen stores and support demanding training sessions. Hydration is also important, particularly during longer or more intense workouts.

Should Everyone Try Powerlifting?

Not necessarily. Heavy compound lifts can be highly effective, but they require proper technique and progression. Beginners may benefit from learning the movements with lighter resistance and professional supervision before attempting heavy loads. People with existing injuries, joint problems or certain medical conditions should also seek appropriate guidance before beginning intensive strength training. Fitness does not require lifting extremely heavy weights. Resistance bands, machines, dumbbells and bodyweight exercises can also help improve strength.

How To Combine Strength Training And Walking

For someone looking for general fitness, a routine could include regular resistance training alongside walking or another form of moderate aerobic activity. The exact schedule should depend on fitness level, age, recovery capacity and individual goals. For example, heavy training days can be balanced with easier walking days, while daily movement can be maintained even when a person takes a break from structured workouts. The key is consistency rather than trying to make every workout extremely intense. Randeep Hooda’s combination of powerlifting and walking highlights an important lesson: fitness doesn’t have to mean choosing between strength and simple movement. Heavy resistance training can help build strength and muscle, while walking provides an accessible way to stay active and support cardiovascular health. The most sustainable fitness routine is not necessarily the hardest one. It is one that balances training, movement, recovery and nutrition according to what your body and goals actually require

Disclaimer: This content including advice provides generic information only.
