Footage from the stage showed his trademark proportions on full display. Massive <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/sam-sulek-shares-his-secrets-stay-consistent\/\">arms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/best-shoulder-exercises\/\">shoulders<\/a>. A tight midsection. Deep <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/generation-iron-exercise-guide-abs\/\">abs<\/a>. Wide shoulders lead into a narrow waist, while his unusually long and full <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/long-bicep-vs-short-bicep\/\">muscle bellies<\/a> give his arms a distinct appearance onstage. His abs and overall midsection have also helped create the type of silhouette that originally made him such an intriguing Classic Physique competitor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those qualities were still clearly visible during his latest appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/the-mandatory-bodybuilding-poses\/\">front double biceps<\/a> showed off his enormous arms and tight waist. His side poses highlighted his chest and upper-body thickness. Even while transitioning between poses, Timms displayed the unusual lines that have made his physique instantly recognizable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also worth noting that Timms\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/best-leg-exercises\/\">legs<\/a> have historically been the most heavily scrutinized part of his physique. His upper body was so exceptional that matching it from top to bottom became a difficult task. This weekend, however, he once again displayed plenty of detail and separation throughout his lower body while maintaining the proportions that made him successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timms is no newcomer, either. He was already competing at the Classic Physique Olympia during the division\u2019s infancy, finishing sixth at the 2016 Olympia. He also won the 2016 Ferrigno Legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, his physique is still capable of getting bodybuilding fans talking.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-generation-iron-trained-with-robert-timms-and-rich-gaspari\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Generation Iron Trained With Robert Timms And Rich Gaspari<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generation Iron got an up-close look at Timms\u2019 approach to building that physique years ago when he trained alongside bodybuilding legend <a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/rich-gaspari-profile-stats\/\">Rich Gaspari.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session combined chest and back into one massive upper-body workout. He believed moving back and forth between chest and back helped him stay dense and lean while increasing the amount of work he could perform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More importantly, Timms emphasized <strong>muscle contraction over simply moving heavy weight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For someone looking at his physique today, that philosophy is particularly interesting. Timms built his reputation around shape and presentation rather than simply trying to become as massive as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workout also represented the influence Gaspari had on Timms\u2019 career. GI previously followed their relationship in <em>Gaspari: The New Era<\/em>, where Gaspari trained and mentored the rising Classic Physique competitor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-robert-timms-incredible-battle-with-cancer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Robert Timms\u2019 Incredible Battle With Cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timms\u2019 bodybuilding career becomes even more remarkable when considering what happened before it began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During an exclusive Generation Iron interview, Timms revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer at just 21 years old while serving in the military and stationed in Aviano, Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It began with severe pain near his left knee and shin. Timms initially received other diagnoses before another doctor ordered a scan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diagnosis was cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timms recalled being confronted almost immediately with a terrifying possibility. One doctor told him he could potentially have to learn to live with one leg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Timms underwent aggressive chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He completed seven chemotherapy sessions and ultimately went into remission. His immune system had been severely compromised by the treatment, but he eventually recovered and began seriously lifting weights after a deployment to Afghanistan in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timms later told Generation Iron that the experience changed the way he viewed adversity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re sick. There\u2019s medicine. You\u2019re going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That mentality eventually carried over into bodybuilding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than leaving the military after his treatment, Timms elected to continue serving. He eventually managed the demands of his military career alongside the schedule required of an elite professional bodybuilder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one point, Timms even told Generation Iron that he routinely survived on approximately three hours of sleep while balancing bodybuilding with his work obligations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring my preps I\u2019m mostly running off of adrenaline,\u201d Timms told GI at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-robert-timms-remains-one-of-classic-physique-s-most-unique-competitors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Robert Timms Remains One Of Classic Physique\u2019s Most Unique Competitors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classic Physique has changed dramatically since Robert Timms first entered the division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competitors are bigger. The talent pool is deeper. The standard established at the Olympia has risen tremendously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Timms remains an interesting throwback to the earlier identity of the division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His physique isn\u2019t difficult to recognize. The huge arms, broad shoulders, narrow waist and dramatic proportions immediately separate him from much of the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was true when Generation Iron followed his career years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And judging by his latest return to the stage, it\u2019s still true today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a veteran who has spent considerable time away from the spotlight, simply returning with a physique capable of generating this kind of reaction is impressive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert Timms is back.
