{"id":25925,"date":"2026-07-30T20:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=25925"},"modified":"2026-07-30T20:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T20:30:00","slug":"glasgow-day-5-emily-campbell-stars-on-a-big-day-for-england-and-two-more-golds-for-oceania-international-weightlifting-federation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=25925","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow, Day 5: Emily Campbell stars on a big day for England \u2013 and two more golds for Oceania \u2013 International Weightlifting Federation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">&#13;<br \/>\n                                &#13;<\/p>\n<p>Emily Campbell put on a show for a noisy full house on the final day of weightlifting at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. <em>\u201cThey made so much noise I couldn\u2019t hear myself think!\u201d <\/em>said Campbell after winning her second women\u2019s super-heavyweight gold by a wide margin.<\/p>\n<p>Her team-mate Cyrille Tchatchet II won silver at 110kg to round off a remarkable personal journey in the 12 years since Glasgow last hosted the Games, and there was a third medal for England when Andy Griffiths took a surprise bronze in the super-heavyweights, which David Liti won in dramatic style for New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Fiji were the other winners on the final day, taking Oceania\u2019s haul to four golds during the week. Malaysia won five and India one for Asia, Nigeria took three, Canada two and Campbell\u2019s win meant that for the second Games in succession all five of weightlifting\u2019s continental federations won at least once.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44095\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell-621x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell-621x1024.jpg 621w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell-182x300.jpg 182w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell-768x1267.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell-931x1536.jpg 931w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell-1242x2048.jpg 1242w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Campbell.jpg 1455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Emily Campbell (ENG)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Campbell pulled clear in clean and jerk after three athletes finished within 2kg of each other in snatch.<\/p>\n<p>When she won in Birmingham four years ago, she totalled 286kg and finished 18kg clear of Iuniarra Sipaia from Samoa. This time 254kg would have been enough for victory but Campbell went for more.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody else had finished before Campbell, 32, came out to make her first clean and jerk on 148kg.\u00a0 That secured gold and left her 10kg clear of 20-year-old Aqilah Farhana from Malaysia, with 18-year-old Etta Love from Canada third. But Campbell did not know she had won.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44096\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Podium-1-1024x689.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Podium-1-1024x689.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Podium-1-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Podium-1-768x517.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Podium-1-1536x1034.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W86_Podium-1-2048x1378.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Women\u2019s +86kg podium<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She returned for 155kg and 163kg to earn the biggest cheers of the week, finishing 115-163-278 \u2013 more than she made at the European and World Championships in her past two appearances.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe coaches decide everything and my job is to just go out and lift the bar,\u201d<\/em> she said. <em>\u201cWhen I made my first (clean and jerk) I didn\u2019t know I\u2019d won.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAfter the second I had a good idea that I\u2019d done it. Then my coach asked if I wanted to go out for another one and I said yes. I\u2019ve looked back at the replay and it was just about perfect, so I\u2019m glad I did.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The winning margin was 25kg. Aqilah made 113-140-253 and Love, the 2024 world youth champion, 106-144-250.<\/p>\n<p>Sipaia struggled to 100kg in snatch and bombed out in clean and jerk. On a bad day for Samoa, two other medal contenders also bombed out \u2013 Jack Opeloge at 110kg and favourite Sanele Mao in the super-heavyweights.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell said: <em>\u201cI\u2019m going to watch the big boys (men\u2019s super-heavyweights) then we\u2019re out in Glasgow\u00a0tonight. I\u2019m going to enjoy what\u2019s happened, have some good food and maybe a few drinks.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Aqilah and Love enjoyed the experience too.<em> \u201cI\u2019ve followed Emily Campbell for years and she\u2019s so inspiring,\u201d <\/em>Love said. <em>\u201cTo be on the platform with her was quite an experience.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tchatchet put up a career-best performance at 110kg, a six-from-six 166-208-374, and celebrated on the platform with his mother after the medal ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44093\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Tachtchet-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Tachtchet-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Tachtchet-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Tachtchet-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Tachtchet-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Tachtchet-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Cyrille Tchatchet (ENG) and his family after earning silver in the men\u2019s 110kg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s the first time she has ever seen me compete and for it to be here was very special,\u201d<\/em> said Tchatchet. <em>\u201cI have been desperate to win a Commonwealth Games medal and now I have one around my neck I don\u2019t know how to describe it in words.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve been on quite a journey, with lots of bombs along the way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tchatchet lifted for Cameroon back in 2014, finishing fifth at 85kg. He said it was unsafe to return because his life had turned \u201ctoxic\u201d and stayed in Britain, sleeping rough. He ran out of money in Brighton on the South Coast, fell into depression and contemplated suicide.<\/p>\n<p>As a last resort he called the Samaritans, an emotional support charity, and was taken into police custody at the start of an asylum process that lasted several years. Tchatchet worked, studied, got a job as a mental health nurse in the NHS, started a family (he has\u00a0two daughters), bought a house, returned to weightlifting and lifted at the Tokyo Olympic Games as a member of the IOC refugee Team.<\/p>\n<p>He recently qualified as a cognitive behaviour therapist and will practise in that field for a few years. <em>\u201cI\u2019m back at work on\u00a0Monday,\u201d<\/em> he said. This time Don\u2019s brother Jack, who pipped Rainibogi for the Oceania title in April, was expected to be the main challenger but he bombed out in clean and jerk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44092\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-1024x1015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1015\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-1024x1015.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-768x762.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-1536x1523.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Podium-2048x2031.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Men\u2019s 110kg podium<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Xavier Lusignan from Canada made two good lifts for 159-197-356, which was enough for third place. The Californian Josh Uikilifi, who competes for Tonga, was fourth on 146-185-331.<\/p>\n<p>Commonwealth champion Mao was out of the super-heavyweights when he failed three times to snatch 175kg. That gave Liti a chance to win his second Commonwealth Games gold and he took it despite trailing Lovepreet Singh by 10kg in snatch.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44098\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Liti-1024x965.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Liti-1024x965.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Liti-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Liti-768x724.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Liti-1536x1447.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M110_Liti-2048x1929.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>David Liti (NZL)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Liti, who had not been at his best since finishing eighth at the Paris Olympic Games, had two attempts remaining when Lovepreet, from India, finished 176-212-388. He had to jump 16kg for victory and made it impressively before bringing his coach Tina Ball on the platform to celebrate with him. He finished 166-223-389 after declining his final attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths, who was sixth at 109kg in Birmingham on 346kg, moved up to the supers for the first time in international weightlifting. When Mao departed he took his chance, making 165-191-356 for bronze.<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths, who runs a gym in the northwest of England, is Tchatchet\u2019s room-mate and friend. <em>\u201cI moved up in weight to avoid Cyrille,\u201d <\/em>he said. <em>\u201cI didn\u2019t fancy my chances of qualifying up against him. I loved it \u2013 got to eat a lot and ended up with a medal.
