But the traumatizing wounds remained. <\/p>\n<p>Since her horrifying experience, the now 38-year-old has become a child safety activist, has launched a program teaching women self-defense skills \u2014 and more recently shed light on the healing potential of weightlifting after she<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/04\/22\/celebrity-news\/elizabeth-smart-wins-first-place-in-bodybuilding-competition-after-revealing-shocking-physique\/\"> won first place<\/a> at a bodybuilding competition in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy body has carried me through every worst day, every hellish, grueling experience; it\u2019s created and nurtured three beautiful children, my body has risen to every single challenge life has presented it with, and carried me through, so I refuse to be ashamed of it,\u201d Smart wrote in an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXZszBVERgL\/\"> Instagram post<\/a> celebrating her bodybuilding successes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elizabeth Smart, 38, is now a child safety activist who just won first place in a bodybuilding competition. <span class=\"credit\">FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis was a big change for me, it was hard, it pushed me, challenged me not to give up. I am so proud of myself for doing this. I am so proud of my body, and I want to celebrate it,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The activist received an outpouring of support from her hundreds of thousands of followers, many of whom are fellow survivors, calling her a role model and admiring her \u201ccourage, determination and work ethic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Smart brought light to the healing potential of weightlifting when she won first place at a bodybuilding competition in April. <span class=\"credit\">National Physique Committee<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylor-ann.com\/chooseyourpath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor Ann Pappas<\/a> is one of them.<\/p>\n<p>During a recent lifting session at the gym, the South Florida run coach couldn\u2019t help but notice a random man re-racking her weights \u2014\u00a0before she\u2019d completed her set.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2017 Taylor would have been like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019ll just go get a new plate,\u2019 Pappas recounted. \u201c2026 Taylor was like \u2014 \u2018Bro, what are you doing?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 37-year-old told The Post that she wasn\u2019t always so sure of her place or power \u2014 describing the version of herself from almost a decade ago as \u201cmeek.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite achieving much success in her career \u2014 she holds a master\u2019s degree in education and is now a full-time running and lifting coach \u2014 she neither recognized nor valued who she was.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>For trauma survivor Taylor Ann Pappas, weightlifting has transformed the way she sees herself \u2014\u00a0and the space she takes up in the world. <span class=\"credit\">Andrew Gallinaro<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI hated myself,\u201d she said. \u201cI hated what I looked like. I hated my height. I hated<em> <\/em>my waist. I hated my boobs. I hated my butt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A survivor of sexual assault, Pappas confessed she\u2019d felt disappointment in her body \u2014\u00a0and a disconnection from it \u2014\u00a0for the majority of her life, similar to Smart.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFrom a very young age, I thought that my body belonged to other people, that it was for the consumption or for the pleasure of someone else,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Leaning into competitive cheer and ballet growing up, Pappas always had a strong desire for constant movement \u2014\u00a0but never felt nourished by her passions, saying that both \u201creally became an experience of not being good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forced to assume the role of parent due to a dysregulated, chaotic upbringing, Pappas was already operating in a place of fear, depletion, overexertion, and people-pleasing way before adulthood.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>There are a lot of things she hopes her clients take away from training with her \u2014\u00a0but one of them is learning to love to simply take up space in the world. <span class=\"credit\">Andrew Gallinaro<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere was this feeling of constriction, of scarcity, of shrinking and shapeshifting to be the version of me that was palatable to someone else.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite her athletic background, Pappas never considered or engaged with weightlifting. <\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s something that women with her background, like Smart, are increasingly turning to in an attempt to heal \u2014\u00a0subsequently finding that it\u2019s helping them work through the pain.<\/p>\n<p>Pappas was first introduced to the concept in the wake of a broken engagement. Deciding that she wanted to feel rather than disassociate from the intensity, she began lifting for the first time. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI squatted really heavy, over and over again. At one point, as I reracked, I just started crying. It was cathartic, and the sense was one of hollowed lightness,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Through the strain, she found, for the first time, she was connecting with her body \u2014\u00a0and processing her history. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something really symbolic about choosing to lift a weight and then put it back down. It begs the question of \u2018well, what else are you holding on to? You put the dumbbell down, what else can you put down?\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deciding what to carry, what to unburden and when to stand up, Pappas noticed other shifts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the echo into my life outside of the gym; saying \u2018no,\u2019 stating my actual needs and wants, responding in place of reacting, setting boundaries with people. The heavier I physically lifted in the gym, the heavier the energetic weight I allowed to drop outside of the gym.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Feeling like it was \u201cgatekeeping\u201d not to share her experience and support other survivors, Pappas began training others \u2014 earning her certification in Trauma-Informed Weightlifting (TIWL), a concept growing in popularity in recent years, in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Traditional trauma treatment protocols include cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, and talk therapy, but experts maintain that weightlifting is an underutilized method of healing, as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers cortisol, and sends a cellular message of presence, capability, and safety \u2014\u00a0leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10400004\/#ref33\">improvements in symptoms of PTSD<\/a>, anxiety,<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/05\/24\/strength-training-exercises-can-help-fight-depression\/\"> depression<\/a>, and emotional regulation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Studies have shown that weightlifting is an underutilized healing method \u2014\u00a0one that\u2019s recently growing in popularity. <span class=\"credit\">Maridav \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/candaceliger\/\" target=\"_blank\">Candace Liger<\/a>, TIWL\u2019s director, told The Post that for survivors like herself and Pappas, <\/span>muscle can serve as a symbol of what can be endured and eclipsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWitnessing the body become stronger through consistent training can reshape deeply held beliefs about helplessness,\u201d Liger told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor many, safety and agency have to be felt or even expressed in the body first, before the words can actually form,\u201d she added. \u201cStrength becomes felt and observable, and that serves as a reminder to survivors that they aren\u2019t simply the sum of the violence against them, but much, much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous research has found that<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10400004\/#ref19\"> 70% of U.S. adults<\/a> report experiencing a traumatic event in their lifetime \u2014 and that trauma directly correlates to health conditions such as diabetes, COPD, heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because trauma is recorded and remembered by the body, Liger said \u2014\u00a0processing it through the physical experience of weight lifting can be revolutionary.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIn strength training, so many physiological things happen at once: elevated heart rate, muscular strain, fatigue, and stress occur within a structured environment where the participant has choice, support, and recovery periods,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>As trauma disproportionately affects women, minorities, and marginalized groups, who have been conditioned to perceive themselves as powerless, Liger said that strength training can function as embodied defiance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResistance training can itself become an act of resistance: resisting the idea that strength has a specific body type, identity, or aesthetic; resisting narratives of helplessness; and building the capacity to take up space,\u201d said Liger.<\/p>\n<p>Liger shared that over time, this type of training allows survivors to move through activation without collapsing, panicking, or dissociating.<\/p>\n<p>Pappas credits the craft and TIWL with transforming her life \u2014\u00a0the way she moves, the way she sees and feels herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can do all the talk therapy I want, but if I\u2019m not moving and excavating and exploring my body, then those experiences are getting stuck,\u201d she said. \u201cI see weightlifting as bridging the mental, the physical, the emotional and the spiritual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She urges her clients to come in ready to heal \u2014\u00a0but also to feel the \u201centire kaleidoscope of human emotions\u201d as they progress; especially white-hot anger. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell them to scream,\u201d she said. \u201cOur anger is just as sacred as joy. \u201cIt just wants to be felt, just wants to be seen, just wants to be witnessed, but we spend so much time suppressing it.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lifting has transformed Pappas\u2019 life \u2014 and she loves sharing her experience with others. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Taylor Ann Pappas<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than anything, she wants the women she works with to learn to love the art of simply taking up space \u2014\u00a0and she\u2019s leading by example. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking into a gym now, I put the dumbbells wherever I want. I\u2019m not going to get small,\u201d she laughed. \u201cWomen need to be lifting heavy s\u2013t. You will not be bulky. You will get stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She believes that the culture at large has reinforced the myth as a means of diminishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re not strong, we\u2019re shrunken; if we\u2019re not strong, we\u2019re quiet; if we\u2019re not strong, we are easier to control,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>And the stronger she feels, the more she\u2019s able to step outside of her own experience and see that ultimately, it\u2019s led her somewhere she never expected to be \u2014\u00a0thankful for where she came from. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to younger me for going through what I did,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause if that means I get to spend the rest of my time on this earth helping other individuals to feel good in and connected to their bodies, it was so f\u2013king worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/29\/lifestyle\/how-weightlifting-helps-trauma-survivors-find-power-purpose\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elizabeth Smart was only 14-years-old when she was abducted at knifepoint from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, and sexually assaulted by a street preacher and his wife.
