He was 84.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">The cause was cancer, his daughter, Greta Gaines, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Mr. Gaines was a novelist, screenwriter and globe-trotting sportsman who was honored this year by <a class=\"css-bhdv0x-linkClass\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QILHLZoraE4?si=JapVwjlIpONXwZ4p\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the American Museum of Fly Fishing<\/a>. He wrote of his sporting passions in magazines including Esquire, Garden &amp; Gun and Field &amp; Stream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">\u201cPumping Iron\u201d grew out of a 1972 assignment from Sports Illustrated to cover a bodybuilding contest that would crown Mr. East Coast. It led to a 1974 book, with text by Mr. Gaines and photographs by <a class=\"css-bhdv0x-linkClass\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/28\/movies\/george-butler-dead.html\" title=\"\">George Butler<\/a>, that exposed a muscle subculture that many Americans at the time considered freakish.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-3nieim-MediaFigure-mediaFigureSizeStyles-small e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-pk0wnm-MediaFigCaption-mediaFigCaptionSizeStyles ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-1y7x4cy-Caption-captionTreatmentStyles-linkClass e13ogyst0\">\u201cPumping Iron,\u201d published in 1974, with text by Mr. Gaines and photographs by George Butler, exposed the masses for the first time to a muscle subculture that many considered freakish.<\/span><span class=\"css-1b0d90c-Credit-creditTreatmentStyles e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"iqSOia_accessibilityLabel\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Creators Publishing<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">In the introduction, Mr. Gaines described the book as a \u201creport from the interior of an interesting, colorful and heretofore ignored region of American life.\u201d Much of it was set in the original Gold\u2019s Gym in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-155wybs-print\">\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Neither of its creators expected anyone outside of competitive bodybuilding to be interested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">But the witty and entertaining 1977 film that followed, blending real-life events with scripted interactions and also titled \u201cPumping Iron,\u201d landed just as Americans who had joined a jogging and aerobics boom were discovering strength training. The movie, written (with Mr. Butler) and narrated by Mr. Gaines, followed the charismatic Mr. Schwarzenegger and a rival, the reserved Lou Ferrigno, as they trained and competed for the title of Mr. Olympia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Commercial expectations were modest, but the movie was a box-office hit and made Mr. Schwarzenegger a household name. He went on to star in \u201cConan the Barbarian,\u201d the \u201cTerminator\u201d films, \u201cTwins\u201d and other movies before forging a political career that led to his election as governor of California in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">\u201cThere was no adventure too big for Charles Gaines,\u201d Mr. Schwarzenegger wrote on social media after Mr. Gaines\u2019 death. \u201cI\u2019m lucky that he was always looking for new frontiers, because that\u2019s how he found me and our niche sport of bodybuilding. That\u2019s how the book and the movie \u2018Pumping Iron\u2019 launched me into the mainstream \u2014 he wrote that book and then worked relentlessly on the documentary and introduced bodybuilding to millions and millions of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-155wybs-print\">\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">A graduate of the Iowa Writers\u2019 Workshop at the University of Iowa, Mr. Gaines published a first novel, \u201cStay Hungry,\u201d in 1972, inspired by his own brush with weight-lifting culture as a teenager in Birmingham, Ala. It is also stuffed with hunting and fishing exploits. A critic for Time magazine <a class=\"css-bhdv0x-linkClass\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/archive\/6840085\/books-summer-fiction\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> that Mr. Gaines \u201cis able to write about muscular matters without sounding as if he were arm-wrestling with Hemingway\u2019s ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Mr. Gaines wrote, with <a class=\"css-bhdv0x-linkClass\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/24\/obituaries\/bob-rafelson-dead.html\" title=\"\">Bob Rafelson<\/a>, the screenplay for the 1976 film adaptation of \u201cStay Hungry,\u201d directed by Mr. Rafelson and starring Jeff Bridges and Sally Field; it featured Mr. Schwarzenegger in an early acting role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Mr. Gaines wrote two other novels, \u201cDangler\u201d (1980) and \u201cSurvival Games\u201d (1997); a biography of Charles Atlas (with Mr. Butler); a public-television adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel \u201cSummer\u201d; and a collection of fishing pieces, \u201cThe Next Valley Over: An Angler\u2019s Progress\u201d (2000). He was also a regular contributor to the ABC series \u201cAmerican Sportsman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">A lifelong fisherman who pursued the sport in exotic locales as well as his beloved home water, Tadpole Lake in Alabama, Mr. Gaines was a founding member of the U.S. Fly Fishing Team. He competed in world fly fishing championships in New Zealand and Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">In 1980, Mr. Gaines and Hayes Noel, a friend who was a Wall Street stock trader, got into a debate about whether a city-dweller possessed the same survival instincts as someone raised to hunt and fish in the wild. To settle the dispute, the two organized a competition in a New Hampshire woods and invited a dozen men armed with guns that fired dye-filled pellets used to mark farm stock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-155wybs-print\">\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Thus was born the sport of paintball. Mr. Gaines, Mr. Noel and a third friend formed a company, National Survival Game, which standardized rules and sold paintball equipment. Mr. Gaines has received the Paintball Lifetime Achievement Award and, in 2024, was inducted into <a class=\"css-bhdv0x-linkClass\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/theofficialpaintballhalloffame\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Paintball Hall of Fame<\/a>. A novel he worked on for 10 years, \u201cThe Passions of Saint Francis,\u201d is scheduled to be published in October by Crossroad Publishing Company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">Charles Latham Gaines III was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 6, 1942, to Charles L. Gaines Jr. and Margaret (Shook) Gaines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">The family soon moved to Birmingham, where Mr. Gaines\u2019s father became an executive at his wife\u2019s family business, Shook and Fletcher Supply, a large industrial company active in iron ore mining, heating and air conditioning. Charles grew up in a privileged milieu of maids and country clubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">He attended Washington and Lee University in Virginia but left to travel around the country. He finished a bachelor\u2019s degree at Birmingham-Southern College in 1963.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-155wybs-print\">\n<p class=\"css-aa8b97-Paragraph-baseStyles-paragraphTreatmentStyles-print evys1bk0\">That same year, he married Patricia Ellisor, who had been named Miss Alabama of 1961 and who became an artist.
