{"id":25781,"date":"2026-07-28T20:13:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T20:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=25781"},"modified":"2026-07-28T20:13:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T20:13:00","slug":"glasgow-day-3-double-gold-for-canada-malaysia-wins-again-and-firefighter-doig-on-podium-for-scotland-international-weightlifting-federation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=25781","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow, Day 3: Double gold for Canada, Malaysia wins again \u2013 and firefighter Doig on podium for Scotland \u2013 International Weightlifting Federation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">&#13;<br \/>\n                                &#13;<\/p>\n<p>A third win for Maude Charron, a first victory as a senior for her Canada team-mate Charlotte Simoneau, a silver for England\u2019s Sarah Davies Smale from only two good lifts, yet another champion for Malaysia, a haka on the platform led by a New Zealand medallist with Scottish roots, and a huge celebration for the home nation when firefighter Angus Doig made the podium against all odds.<\/p>\n<p>It was quite a day in Glasgow as the Commonwealth Games weightlifting programme went past the halfway point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44063\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Charron.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>Maude Charron (CAN)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although Charron has won gold and silver at the Olympic Games and was described by Davies- Smale as <em>\u201cone of the great weightlifters of our generation\u201d, <\/em>the most popular medallist on day three was Doig, a firefighter who trains alone in his garage in the Peak District of England.<\/p>\n<p>He had already left the arena more than half an hour before the end of the session and completed his interviews for the Scottish media when he slowly realised he might have to do it all again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44059\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Doig-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Doig-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Doig-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Doig-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Doig-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Doig-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Angus Doig (SCO)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Doig was 27kg behind the leader at halfway in the 88kg category and after making all three clean and jerks he finished on 135-174-309, at least 25kg short of the expected target for any medallist.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy goal had always been just to get to the Commonwealth Games, do my best and try for the top five,\u201d<\/em> he said. <em>\u201cThe podium was never on the cards.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But three failures by athletes from Australia and Mauritius changed the picture. Braydon Kennedy from Canada and Will Swart from South Africa, both medal contenders, had not started yet. If they both bombed out, Doig would finish third.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy failed three times on 182kg. Swart missed at 181kg then 182kg. Doig was now back in the warm-up area and could not bear to watch Swart\u2019s final attempt for 183kg on the big screen.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen I heard the barbell hit the platform I knew he\u2019d missed it. It\u2019s absolutely unbelievable \u2013 and here I am back doing more interviews.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Doig, 27, switched from CrossFit to weightlifting only two and a half years ago. He led a Pou Tangata haka (created for his country\u2019s Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams) on the platform after the medal ceremony, which was widely applauded.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI have Scottish heritage from my dad a few generations back \u2013 and they were from Glasgow \u2013 but I\u2019ve never been here before,\u201d<\/em> he said. <em>\u201cThis medal was ten years of hard work in the making, and it\u2019s great that my family were here to watch.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44061\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M88_Roslin.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\"\/><em>Hafizuddin Roslin (MAS)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hafizuddin Roslin from Malaysia, who had finished second to Kennedy at the Commonwealth Championships last year, won on 162-183-345. Hafizuddin, 22, was the fourth winner for Malaysia in three days, taking his team to the top of the medals table.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44062\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-683x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-1024x1536.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-1366x2048.jpeg 1366w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/MAS4Gold-scaled.jpeg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>The four gold medallists from Malaysia\u2026 so far<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUsually we just have one or two winners,\u201d<\/em> said the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation president Ayub Rahmat. <em>\u201cThis is already Malaysia\u2019s best achievement in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games, and we could win again\u00a0tomorrow\u00a0(Syahmi Nor Ghazali\u00a0at 94kg). Within the federation, we set ourselves a target of five golds and we have a good chance of getting them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis success shows that weightlifting can become one of Malaysia\u2019s leading medal-contributing sports at major multi-sport events.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There was an equally exciting end to the women\u2019s 63kg session. Charron missed her second clean and jerk, then made it to finish on 102-130-232. That left her 15kg ahead of Davies Smale.<\/p>\n<p>The bar was loaded at 138kg, a jump of 16kg. <em>\u201cI did 134 once when I was a 71, but I\u2019ve never got near to 138,\u201d <\/em>said Davies Smale. <em>\u201cBut of course I was going to have a go.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-44064\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Podium-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Podium-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Podium-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Podium-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Podium-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W63_Podium-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Women\u2019s 63kg podium<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She even got under the bar before crumpling. <em>\u201cThat sort of thing, it\u2019s her signature move,\u201d <\/em>said Charron. <em>\u201cI\u2019ve been competing with Sarah for years and I was rooting for her. I was shocked she got under it. She was courageous, for sure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Davies Smale made 95-122-217 from two good lifts. <em>\u201cProbably my best two from six ever,\u201d <\/em>she said. Femily Notte from Nauru, who at 17 is barely half the age of Charron and Davies Smale, was third on 100-116-216.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe\u2019s the next generation,\u201d<\/em> said Davies Smale. <em>\u201cPerformances like that might force me into retirement!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She and her husband Ed Smale were unable to take a honeymoon during her preparations for Glasgow so they are off to Madagascar for three weeks now. <em>\u201cThen we\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d <\/em>said Davies Smale, who will be 34 next month.<\/p>\n<p>Charron, 33, who will definitely be going to China for the IWF World Championships in October, is enjoying life. She combines her lifting with coaching and working for the Canadian Olympic Committee, heading a project to bring a million youngsters into sport.<\/p>\n<p>Charron\u2019s team-mate Simoneau was twice a junior world champion.
