But according to the man behind his training, building muscle doesn&#8217;t require fancy techniques or endless hours in the gym.<br data-node-id=\"3.5\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a36132309\/shaun-stafford-workout-building-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a36132309\/shaun-stafford-workout-building-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Shaun Stafford\" data-node-id=\"8.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Shaun Stafford<\/a>, the two-time WBFF world champion bodybuilder who has coached Matthews for the past 12 years, says muscle-building success comes down to a handful of key principles.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Here are the four rules he follows when helping clients add size and strength.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"body-h3 css-7cyxa emevuu60\">1. Track Your Lifts<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Progress starts with measurement.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">&#8216;Follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a44760238\/progressive-overload\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a44760238\/progressive-overload\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"progressive\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">progressive<\/a> resistance training programme,&#8217; says Stafford. &#8216;Track the weights that you&#8217;re lifting and make sure they&#8217;re going in the right direction.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In practice, that means recording your workouts and aiming to gradually lift more weight, perform more reps or improve your execution over time. Without progression, muscle growth is difficult to sustain.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"body-h3 css-7cyxa emevuu60\">2. Own Every Rep<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Rushing through sets won&#8217;t do your muscles any favours. Stafford aims for &#8216;anything between 40 and 70 seconds of tension per set&#8217; using slow, controlled repetitions and a full range of motion. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The goal isn&#8217;t simply moving weight from point A to point B. He recommends &#8216;big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a44561383\/compound-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a44561383\/compound-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"compound\" data-node-id=\"53.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">compound<\/a> powerful moves&#8217; that deliver the greatest return on effort.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"57\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">&#8216;Press, pull, squat, hinge and lunge hard, then use accessory work to add volume where it counts.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"61\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">These exercises allow you to train multiple muscle groups at once, move heavier loads and maximise training efficiency.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"62\" class=\"body-h3 css-7cyxa emevuu60\">4. Treat Recovery as Part of the Programme<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"66\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Muscle isn&#8217;t built during training. It&#8217;s built during recovery.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"70\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">&#8216;Your body won&#8217;t repair and grow if you&#8217;re not giving it that anabolic environment,&#8217; says Stafford.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"74\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">That means prioritising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a754243\/how-much-protein-should-i-eat-to-build-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a754243\/how-much-protein-should-i-eat-to-build-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"adequate protein intake\" data-node-id=\"74.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">adequate protein intake<\/a>, sufficient calories, quality sleep and recovery habits that allow you to return to training ready to perform again.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-takeaway\" data-node-id=\"75\" class=\"body-h2 css-xyuaad emevuu60\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"79\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While training plans and exercise selection matter, Stafford believes long-term muscle growth is built on consistency.
