His final attempt at 142kg got a majority verdict from the referees and he edged clear of three athletes clustered within 2kg of his winning total.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-43812\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M60_Mendez-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M60_Mendez-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M60_Mendez-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M60_Mendez-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M60_Mendez-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/M60_Mendez-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Victor Mendez (MEX)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of them was Evgenii Butuzov, who had a good chance to become Russia\u2019s first officially recognised world champion in five years. Butuzov had a lift to spare when he drew level with the long-time leader Atabek Azamatov from Turkmenistan. He missed it and finished on 111-138-249 in third place.<\/p>\n<p>Azamatov was second on 116-133-249, behind Mendez on 108-142-250. That final lift by Mendez knocked the snatch silver medallist Kirby Alasas down to fourth place, ending the Philippines\u2019 100 per cent record of a medal on total in every session over the first two days. Since then, both nations have developed strong teams of youth and junior weightlifters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-43814\" src=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W53_Amanova-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W53_Amanova-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W53_Amanova-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W53_Amanova-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W53_Amanova-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/iwf.sport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/W53_Amanova-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><em>Ogulshat Amanova (TKM)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Ogulshat Amanova won, with team-mate Shabnam Kerimbayeva third, Turkmenistan had athletes on the podium on total for the fifth straight time at the World Youths. Azamatov\u2019s later silver underlined the Turkmenistan teenagers\u2019 prowess.<\/p>\n<p>Amanova was winning for the first time since she took the 2023 youth world title at 45kg aged 13, although she has performed consistently well since then. She improved her best total by 4kg in making five from six for 86-105-191.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines \u2013 where Diaz has set up her own academy and started teaching weightlifting at university \u2013 has also had plenty of teenage champions in recent years. She is a product of the Olympic champion\u2019s\u00a0hometown training facility in Zamboanga, as is the 48kg champion on\u00a0Monday, Alexsandra Diaz \u2013 the Tokyo champion\u2019s niece.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m so happy to see youngsters with a barbell, to see how they love the sport,\u201d <\/em>Hidilyn Diaz said recently when she was pushing for weightlifting to be taken up by more schools.\u00a0<em>\u201cI\u2019m using my status as an Olympic champion to spread the sport in the Philippines.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peralta failed with her final attempts in snatch and clean and jerk, finishing 85-103-188.
