Right now the talk of the town throughout the internet is a showdown between Nick Walker and Jo Palacios at the 2026 IFBB Tampa Pro. But what\u2019s really getting the conversation going is the fact that Jo is very much playing this like a humble competitor, meanwhile Nick is using every last opportunity to insist that he\u2019s going to annihilate everyone. Why is The Mutant doing this? Why would he disrespect the competition in Tampa to this degree? If he was so good and if he was so ready and so poised to qualify, why didn\u2019t he talk like this and jump into shows like the Pittsburgh or the New York Pro? Why is it that he has chosen the Tampa, which also happens to be Derek\u2019s backyard to make such a bold claim with regard to how he\u2019s going to fare there?<\/p>\n
Tampa is no cake walk, either. Even though it\u2019s not one of the big three shows it\u2019s definitely in the conversation. Tim Gardner puts on a phenomenal contest and his association with Jake Wood is a matter of public record. Tim is a heavy hitter and usually his shows draw out top talent.<\/p>\n
So why would the former North American champion talk like this? Why would he put this kind of pressure on himself? At the end of the day, what is necessary is simply to qualify. Whether you win by one point or you dominate the competition \u2013 it doesn\u2019t really matter, right? I mean the goal here should be to win, but why do you have to win like this? Why does Nick feel the need to make everyone else around him smaller? If anything, he may be setting himself up for failure.<\/p>\n
Over the years, I have come across bodybuilders that feel the need to broadcast their dominance. And that\u2019s not something really that the bodybuilder should be doing himself. That is something that falls onto the media. For example, if I want to write an article and I want to speculate that Nick, Jo, or anyone else is going to dominate a particular lineup, then that\u2019s my purview. As a writer that\u2019s part of what I do. A handicapper would do the same. But for a competitor to draw that line in the sand is really nothing more than asking for trouble. I mean we saw what happened to Derek when he was coming up in the 212. He had a successful pro debut, qualified, took top five at the O and from there started writing checks that unfortunately his ass couldn\u2019t cash in those early years. It took guys like Jose Raymond to tell Derek to back off, to not put himself in that public domain, to not make headlines but to bring his best. When a competitor puts themself in that spotlight, it usually comes with catastrophic results. Because unless Nick truly absolutely destroys Jo and the rest of the competition, then he will have come up short. AGAIN. And that\u2019s even he barely squeaks by with a win.<\/p>\n
I would also say that Jo has improved consistently and that I don\u2019t think Nick is going to hit the stage in Tampa and dust the guy. Palacios has put on significant size without compromising his aesthetics. He\u2019s also a competitor that comes dialed in. Now of course I know the temptation causing a lot of people to not even consider the potential of Jo or anybody upsetting Nick in Tampa. And that position comes from the fact that Nick has won the North Americans, that he won the Arnold Classic, and that he won the New York Pro three times. People look at what he has done on paper and what he has done in the past as a way to deny anyone from beating him today.<\/p>\n
Basically unless a top three Olympian is in the mix, most people that subscribe to what a person has done in the past are not going to be all that impressed by competitors outside of that top three or top six battling Walker. They\u2019re going to measure them by what they\u2019ve done but not what they can do. And that is a colossal mistake because if bodybuilding teaches us anything- it\u2019s that it doesn\u2019t matter what you did in the past, it only matters what you do on game day.<\/p>\n
The same logic applies to social media bodybuilders \u2013 guys that have the goon lighting, the angles, the special effects etc. They might look their best on Instagram, but they may look nothing like that on game day. It\u2019s like who cares what you do posing in a mirror by yourself? What matters in physique-based sports is what the judges see. It\u2019s what you show them. That is where the placings are decided. So again, what Nick did in 2020 or 2023 or 2025 doesn\u2019t matter in 2026. And that cockiness that he has about him could actually be his undoing because instead of being humble like Jo he is literally predicting the future. And if he doesn\u2019t win, then what?<\/p>\n
You see, I never really understood what Nick\u2019s whole approach was. From dropping a longtime coach to pretending to be self-coached to then getting another coach. But this last coach is really a no-name. It isn\u2019t a big name coach. Did he do that because it would be easier for him to blame him for any shortcomings in his prep? Or did he do that because maybe he\u2019s just testing the waters?<\/p>\n
Why Nick didn\u2019t hire the Guy is beyond me. I mean they brought one of the best looks he\u2019s ever had and took a runner-up at the Arnold Classic. I would think that would have been more than enough of an audition to hire Cisternino for the rest of 2026 but I think Nick didn\u2019t like the fact that he was outted. He didn\u2019t self prep. So now what does he do? He says he\u2019s insults his fellow competitors. He doesn\u2019t even say dominate, he says he\u2019s going to embarrass them. What kind of a professional athlete talks like that?<\/p>\n
I certainly don\u2019t think that a future Mr Olympia would get down like that. What a champion is supposed to do is bring their best and battle hard, pose hard, and try to keep their head up. But this whole idea of embarrassing the competition seems like bullying to me. It doesn\u2019t even seem like self-confidence. I mean I am vocally critical of Derek for being overly confident. I think Lunsford at this point could even be called cocky, but there\u2019s a difference, there is a stark difference between being cocky and just being a downright ass.<\/p>\n
