I was drawn to women who challenged expectations and pushed boundaries\u2014Wonder Woman was my hero and I admired powerhouse female athletes like bodybuilder Rachel McLish. I always loved sports and got into weightlifting in college, but for most of my adult life, fitness was only something I managed to squeeze in here and there.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">However, at 47, after raising three kids and going through a divorce, I finally felt ready to invest more time and energy into myself. I knew I had untapped potential in the gym and I was eager to see what I was truly capable of. After years of admiring strong women, I wanted to become one, so I took a leap of faith and entered into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a71020462\/female-bodybuilders-50s-before-and-after\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a71020462\/female-bodybuilders-50s-before-and-after\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodybuilding competition\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">bodybuilding competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">I began working with a local coach who brought structure and intensity to my training. Suddenly, my workouts weren\u2019t just occasional\u2014they were deliberate, consistent, and focused. I did a mix of heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30522035\/what-is-strength-training\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a30522035\/what-is-strength-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">strength training<\/a> and cardio almost every day to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a69287419\/guide-to-building-muscle\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a69287419\/guide-to-building-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"build muscle\" data-node-id=\"2.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">build muscle<\/a>, and I became more serious about nutrition. I\u2019d always tried to eat well, but I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70080423\/how-much-protein-to-put-on-one-pound-of-muscle\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70080423\/how-much-protein-to-put-on-one-pound-of-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"increased my protein intake\" data-node-id=\"2.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">increased my protein intake<\/a> to support muscle growth, eating one gram of protein per pound of body weight. Within weeks, I noticed I had more muscle definition, was lifting heavier weights with better control, and felt more focused and confident in and out of the gym.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Around four months later, I stepped on stage for my first bodybuilding competition. Posing under bright lights in a bikini in my late 40s was intimidating, but I was so proud of myself. I had put in the hard work and could finally show that I was as strong as the women I\u2019d always looked up to. Competing proved that age didn\u2019t define what I was capable of. Still, the competitor in me never disappeared. At 65, life was a little less busy, and I knew there was still more in my tank, so I entered another bodybuilding show. The training process demanded the same discipline, consistency, and willingness to step outside my comfort zone. But this time, the experience felt even more meaningful and rewarding. As I pushed myself through each phase of training, I was reminded that the drive to challenge myself hadn\u2019t diminished with age. If anything, it had only grown stronger.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">After my second bodybuilding competition, I was motivated to keep fitness a constant in my life and continued strength training three to four days a week from then on.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"body-h2 css-1xb0l5r emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"9.0\">Now, at 69, my fitness routine is centered around strength and mobility work.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Shortly after my second bodybuilding show, I had my hip replaced, so the last two years have been focused on rebuilding my body. I strength train four days a week with a coach at my local gym, doing one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70096523\/best-leg-day-exercises\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70096523\/best-leg-day-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lower-body day\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">lower-body day<\/a>, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a20703383\/dumbbells-for-total-body-toning\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a20703383\/dumbbells-for-total-body-toning\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"full-body day\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">full-body day<\/a>, and two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65668039\/quick-back-and-bicep-workout-strength-training\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65668039\/quick-back-and-bicep-workout-strength-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"upper-body days\" data-node-id=\"10.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">upper-body days<\/a>. Most sessions include five to six exercises, with three sets of 8 to 12 reps and a steady focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70577556\/progressive-overload-training-benefits-and-how-to-do-it\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a70577556\/progressive-overload-training-benefits-and-how-to-do-it\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"progressive overload\" data-node-id=\"10.7\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">progressive overload<\/a> (gradually increasing the intensity, volume, or duration of my workouts over time to become stronger). Some mornings, I\u2019ll go for a 40-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65832972\/power-walking-guide-benefits-form\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65832972\/power-walking-guide-benefits-form\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"power walk\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\">power walk<\/a> to kick-start my day, while on other days, I\u2019ll spend 15 minutes on the Jacobs Ladder (a non-motorized machine that feels like climbing a never-ending set of rungs). Occasionally, I\u2019ll even flip heavy tires with my trainer to combine cardio and strength.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">As I\u2019ve gotten older, I\u2019ve learned that recovery matters just as much as the workout itself. I aim for at least 130 grams a day, which means chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, salmon, and lean beef are always in rotation.
