\n John Richardson, known as ‘Gez,’ trains at Heavy Metal Gym in Ilkley, part of the Billingtons Strength and Fitness brand, and won the M3 under 105kg title at the British Masters Powerlifting Championships in Edinburgh.\n<\/p>\n
\n The event, held in early June, is organised by British Powerlifting and provides a competitive platform for athletes aged 40 and above.\n<\/p>\n
\n Mr Richardson said: “I’m incredibly proud to be named British National Champion.\n<\/p>\n
\n “It’s the result of a huge amount of hard work and commitment, but I’ve enjoyed every step of the journey.\n<\/p>\n
\n “The support and camaraderie at Heavy Metal Gym have been fantastic and there was a great atmosphere among the competitors in Edinburgh.\n<\/p>\n
\n “If there’s one thing this proves, it’s that age should never be a barrier to challenging yourself and achieving something special.”\n<\/p>\n
\n \n He competed in the 60-plus age category and achieved a squat of 202.5kg and a bench press of 130kg\u2014both setting new Yorkshire and North East records\u2014alongside a deadlift of 225kg.\n<\/p>\n \n Powerlifting consists of three core disciplines: squat, bench press, and deadlift.\n<\/p>\n \n Athletes compete within age and weight categories to ensure fair competition.\n<\/p>\n \n Pete Billington, owner of Heavy Metal Gym, travelled to Edinburgh to support Mr Richardson.\n<\/p>\n \n Mr Billington said: “I’m absolutely delighted for Gez.\n<\/p>\n \n “To become a British champion is a tremendous achievement and everyone at the gym is incredibly proud of him.\n<\/p>\n \n “He’s represented Ilkley brilliantly and this could be just the beginning, with the possibility of international selection and the chance to represent Team GB.”\n<\/p>\n \n Mr Billington said: “We’ve seen some fantastic competition success recently from members of all ages and abilities.\n<\/p>\n \n “One of the things we’re most proud of is helping people progress from complete beginners to confident competitors.\n<\/p>\n \n “Whether someone’s goal is to step onto a platform or simply become stronger, fitter and healthier, we’re here to support them every step of the way.”\n<\/p>\n \n Heavy Metal Gym, located on Dansk Way in Ilkley, accepts members from the age of 13.\n<\/p>\n \n More information can be found at www.heavy-metal-gym.co.uk.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\nJohn Richardson (centre) on the podium (Image: Supplied)<\/em><\/span>\n<\/p>\n
