Mike Mentzer was a former Mr. Universe and a pioneer in bodybuilding who died young at the age of 49. The cause of death was a heart attack.<\/p>\n

Mentzer died 25 years ago this week, on June 10, 2026. The X page 2001 Live<\/em>wrote<\/a>, “American bodybuilder Mike Mentzer dies of a heart attack in Rolling Hills, California. He was 49.”<\/p>\n

A website<\/a> devoted to Mentzer says, “Mike Mentzer was a true pioneer in bodybuilding philosophy, known for both his no-nonsense approach to training and his unwavering commitment to logic and science.”<\/p>\n

Mike Mentzer’s Cause of Death Was Tragic<\/h2>\n

According to his website timeline<\/a>, Mentzer died in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

He was discovered “dead on the floor by his desk, where he had been working on more parts to the script for the video late into the night,” the bio says. The video was a training video he was working on.<\/p>\n

“Mike\u2019s death is the result of a heart attack, he had severe atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and had suffered previous heart attacks, his left main coronary artery was blocked. Mike also had morphine in his system that had been prescribed to him for pain management.” His brother Ray discovered him, the timeline says.<\/p>\n

According to Iron Man<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> Mentzer gave an interview to The Sandwich<\/em> just weeks before his death. “Things have been going along very well. I own a mail order business, as many people know; maintain a Web site, which requires a lot of work; I write articles; and I’m working on a video,” he said. “All of that takes up a lot of time, but I live up to my responsibilities, enjoying it, working up to 10, 12 hours a day. That’s been my pattern for many years. I can say my life revolves around my work.”<\/p>\n

He spoke about his health problems in that story, saying, “I had a number of medical problems, including one that involved surgery on my cervical spine. I had pneumonia, bronchitis and recently discovered blood clots in my lungs. It’s fairly severe, but I’m on potent blood thinners, which should take care of the problem.”<\/p>\n

Ray Mentzer, who was also a bodybuilder, missed a <\/a>kidney dialysis appointment and died just two days after Mike.<\/p>\n
