Dexter \u2018The Blade\u2019 Jackson spent decades doing exactly that, building one of the most decorated physiques in  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodybuilding\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">bodybuilding<\/a> history and becoming the oldest man ever to win the Mr Olympia title. Now, at 56, Jackson\u2019s priorities have changed.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In a recent  <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wykYrA_1QI8?si=zIA8EOhvkV857Xyb\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wykYrA_1QI8?si=zIA8EOhvkV857Xyb\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"YouTube video\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">YouTube video<\/a>, the bodybuilding legend shared one of his favourite chest  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workouts\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">workouts<\/a>. But there wasn\u2019t a barbell  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a755647\/how-to-master-the-bench-press\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a755647\/how-to-master-the-bench-press\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bench press\" data-node-id=\"9.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">bench press<\/a>  in sight. Instead, the session focused on low-impact machine exercises designed to build muscle without beating up the joints.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Reflecting on his bench press strength, Jackson recalled lifting as much as 455lbs during his competitive career.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I was getting it back then,\u2019 he said. \u2018I can\u2019t do that now.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">His modified training approach still delivers results \u2013 just with far less wear and tear.<br data-node-id=\"23.1\"\/><\/p>\n<section data-node-id=\"24\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-16\">\n<h2 title=\"The Workout\" data-anchor-id=\"the-workout\" class=\"body-h2 css-1gywm4a emt9r7s1\">The Workout<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"body-text css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"28.0\">A. Incline Fly Machine: 4 sets x 10 reps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"body-text css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"41.0\">D. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a70636033\/machine-cable-fly-chest\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a70636033\/machine-cable-fly-chest\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Decline Cable Fly\" data-node-id=\"41.0.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Decline Cable Fly<\/a>: 4 sets x 10 reps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"45\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I used to keep my reps with all my sets anywhere from 8 to 12,\u2019 Jackson explained. \u2018I usually end up with about 10 reps.\u2019<\/p>\n<section data-node-id=\"47\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-24\">\n<h2 title=\"Why it works\" data-anchor-id=\"why-it-works\" class=\"body-h2 css-1gywm4a emt9r7s1\">Why it works<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"48\" class=\"body-h4 css-16gglk6 emevuu60\">Hammer Strength Iso Flat Bench<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"52\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Jackson opens the workout with the Hammer Strength Iso Flat Bench.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"56\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The machine provides stability throughout the lift, allowing him to train the chest hard without placing the same demands on the shoulders and stabilising muscles required during a traditional barbell bench press.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"60\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018If you guys have joint pain and you&#8217;re looking to ease it, make sure you try doing more machine work,\u2019 he said. \u2018That\u2019ll take a lot of stress off the joints compared with free weights.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"61\" class=\"body-h4 css-16gglk6 emevuu60\">Incline Chest Press Machine<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"65\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The second exercise shifts the emphasis towards the upper chest.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"69\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The incline angle increases activation of the clavicular fibres of the pecs while also recruiting the front deltoids and triceps. As with the previous movement, the fixed path of the machine allows for greater control throughout the lift.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"70\" class=\"body-h4 css-16gglk6 emevuu60\">Incline Fly Machine<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"74\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Unlike pressing exercises, flyes place the chest under a greater stretch.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"78\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The machine\u2019s guided path also aligns with Jackson\u2019s current training philosophy of maximising muscle stimulus while minimising joint stress.<\/p>\n<h2 data-node-id=\"79\" class=\"body-h4 css-16gglk6 emevuu60\">Decline Cable Fly<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"83\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Jackson finishes the session with decline cable flyes, performed from a high-to-low angle to place greater emphasis on the lower chest.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"87\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Using cables keeps tension on the muscle throughout the entire range of motion, making the exercise an effective finisher after the heavier pressing movements.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"91\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">By ending the workout with isolation work rather than another press, Jackson can continue accumulating training volume without subjecting his joints to additional heavy loading.<\/p>\n<section data-node-id=\"92\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-35\">\n<h2 title=\"How Dexter Jackson Trains at 56\" data-anchor-id=\"how-dexter-jackson-trains-at-56\" class=\"body-h2 css-1gywm4a emt9r7s1\">How Dexter Jackson Trains at 56<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"96\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">During the session, the former Mr Olympia revealed he currently weighs between 200 and 205lbs and is aiming to get down to around 190.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"100\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018It\u2019s so crazy because I still have people telling me, \u201cGod damn, you&#8217;re big as hell\u201d,\u2019 Jackson joked.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"104\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Even years after retiring from competition, Jackson remains considerably more muscular than the average person. But he also acknowledges that he can no longer train the way he did in his prime.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"108\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Machines, cables and moderate rep ranges now form the foundation of his workouts, allowing him to continue building and maintaining muscle while protecting the joints that have endured more than three decades of bodybuilding.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"112\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The result?
