I spent many days of my childhood shimmying around my living room to Shania Twain\u2019s album,\u00a0Come On Over<\/em>, which, of course, includes two of the best songs ever to grace humankind: \u201cThat Don\u2019t Impress Me Much\u201d and \u201cMan! I Feel Like a Woman.\u201d Twain helped me become an empowered seven-year-old who enjoyed scoffing at anyone who owned a car.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Us Weekly <\/em>published a sprawling interview<\/a> with Twain, who\u2019ll turn 60 later this year, covering everything from her milestone birthday to how much water she drinks to how she eventually learned to accept herself to the upsetting backstory that ultimately led to the creation of one of our species\u2019 greatest songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always insecure about my body,\u201d she told the outlet. \u201cAs a female, throughout my youth [I was] touched inappropriately so many times [and] I was in abusive situations where you hate being a woman. I hated being a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cMy mother goes, \u2018What do you want to be when you grow up?\u2019 and I said, \u2018A bodybuilder.\u2019 I wanted to be a big, strong man that nobody was going to f\u2014 around with. No one was going to touch my arm or my ass or anything unless I was OK with it. I was hiding all through my teens. I hated having boobs, I hated having hips.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twain said \u201cMan, I Feel Like a Woman\u201d was ultimately a song about finally accepting her body: \u201cOnce I got behind the camera and started looking at clothes and fashion, I was like, \u2018Wow, I\u2019m actually a woman after all, and I think I might like it.\u2019 When I wrote \u2018Man, I Feel Like a Woman!,\u2019 it was an absolute celebration [of that]. And I felt empowered behind the camera. I was like, \u2018They can\u2019t grab me. I\u2019m safe.’\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not crying, you\u2019re crying. My inner child is definitely crying just a little.<\/p>\n\n
