The first test was audio free, while the second test allowed the participants to choose their own tunes.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is the Best BPM for Workout Music?<\/h2>\n<p>For those looking to put together their own playlists, the self-selected <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/3UOcI53rsquTX1CD6zXI72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracks clocked in at around 120-140 beats per minute.<\/a> That gives you some up-tempo options for upping the intensity like \u201cHit me with your best shot\u201d by Pat Benatar, \u201cJump\u201d by Van Halen, or \u201cThese Days\u201d from the Foo Fighters.<\/p>\n<h2>What Did the Study on Workout Music Find?<\/h2>\n<p>After both tests had been completed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1469029226000579\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data showed that sessions allowing the self-selected music increased cycling time-to-exhaustion<\/a> by 20%, meaning that individuals took on a greater cardiovascular load because of the longer training duration, without increasing their average energy cost per minute.<\/p>\n<h2>The Science Behind Music and Exercise Motivation<\/h2>\n<p>Okay, but how does curating your own playlist lead to crushing greater workouts? \u201cSelf-selected music doesn\u2019t change your fitness level or make your heart work dramatically harder in the moment \u2014 it simply helps you tolerate sustained effort for longer,\u201d explained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jyu.fi\/en\/news\/feel-the-beat-not-the-burn-study-shows-your-favourite-playlist-can-help-you-train-harder-and-longer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Danso, who was the lead researcher and is from JYU\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain<\/a>. \u201cIt may be an incredibly simple, zero-cost tool that lets people push further in training without feeling extra strain at the end. Our findings suggest that the right playlist may make tough sessions feel more doable and more enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who trained while listening to their tracks burned more total energy from the longer sessions, but their heart rate and lactate levels were the same.
