Clavicular, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U2LEh0LlOwE\" class=\"text link\">a video on his YouTube channel<\/a>\u2014before recently revealing that the drug is part of his so-called leanmaxxing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/everybody-has-a-stack-now\" class=\"text link\">stack<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/how-unregulated-peptides-became-the-hottest-thing-on-the-fringes-of-fitness-and-anti-aging\" class=\"text link\">Peptides in general are booming<\/a>, and retatrutide\u2014otherwise known as \u201creta\u201d\u2014in particular is poised to prove more consequential than even Ozempic in terms of its broader impact on the health system. But what is this drug that \u201ceveryone\u201d supposedly is or soon will be using, and why is a 20-something Chad with an affinity for shirtless mirror selfies self-medicating with obesity drugs, anyway?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is retatrutide?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ratatrutide is a breakthrough new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/how-to-lose-weight-quick-healthy-2\" class=\"text link\">weight loss<\/a> drug that is currently showing a lot of promise in its ability to treat obesity and potentially other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/health-conditions\" class=\"text link\">health conditions<\/a>. Even at a time when revolutionary new obesity drugs seem to be entering the market every few months, experts that spoke to GQ are framing retatrutide as a major leap forward.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the most clinically effective obesity drugs on the market have targeted only one or two receptors responsible for managing variables like appetite, blood sugar, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/i-went-on-a-quest-to-fix-my-metabolism-heres-what-i-learned-1\" class=\"text link\">insulin sensitivity<\/a>. \u201cThis one is special and different because it works on three different receptors,\u201d says Jessica Duncan, MD, DABOM, DABA, board-certified obesity medicine physician and Chief Medical Officer at <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.ivimhealth.com\/providers\/jessica-duncan-md-dabom-daba\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqdTCgpFLMh4bkRMDRmRswgktqACglJWOpsP2QDF2d4YC9jEIKM\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.ivimhealth.com\/providers\/jessica-duncan-md-dabom-daba\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqdTCgpFLMh4bkRMDRmRswgktqACglJWOpsP2QDF2d4YC9jEIKM&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ivimhealth.com\/providers\/jessica-duncan-md-dabom-daba\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqdTCgpFLMh4bkRMDRmRswgktqACglJWOpsP2QDF2d4YC9jEIKM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ivim Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/four-things-you-should-do-after-starting-weight-loss-drugs\" class=\"text link\">semaglutide<\/a>, the now ubiquitous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/four-things-you-should-do-after-starting-weight-loss-drugs\" class=\"text link\">weight loss medication<\/a> that belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, commonly called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/i-thought-glp-1s-would-cure-my-eating-disorder-they-made-it-even-worse\" class=\"text link\">GLP-1s<\/a>. These drugs, under common brand names like Ozempic and Wegovy, target the body\u2019s GLP-1 receptors by mimicking natural hormones responsible for regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. They improve insulin sensitivity, help to slow the movement of food through the digestive system, and are ultimately able to increase satiety and reduce food cravings.<\/p>\n<p>Then came tirzepatide, a dual agonist that targets both GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors. (Popular brands of tirezpatide include Mounjaro and Zepbound.) \u201cThey added a second feature, which basically was management of glycogen,\u201d says Erik Nuveen, a triple board-certified surgeon with more than 20 years of experience treating patients with obesity and metabolic disease, and co-founder of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/olympuscosmetic.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/olympuscosmetic.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/olympuscosmetic.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympus Cosmetic Group<\/a>. Because of this dual approach, tirzepatide has been shown to more effectively reduce blood sugar levels and ultimately lead to greater <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/how-to-actually-burn-off-belly-fat-and-why-it-matters-4\" class=\"text link\">weight loss<\/a> than single-agonist medications like semaglutide.<\/p>\n<p>Enter retatrutide\u2014the triple threat. \u201cThis medication adds what&#8217;s called a glucagon receptor agonist,\u201d Dr. Duncan says. \u201cIt works primarily on the liver, in the gastrointestinal tract, and even on the fat tissue. The glucagon effect is really what sets retatrutide apart from other medications, and that&#8217;s because it has a little bit more of an effect on the liver and the fat tissue.\u201d Basically, retatrutide tackles weight loss through multiple pathways simultaneously. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely the most effective means ever created through science to reduce the storage of fat,\u201d says Dr. Nuveen.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why are you hearing about retatrutide now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s become a hot topic, because the phase three clinical trials are now underway,\u201d Dr. Duncan says.
