TAYLOR, Mich. \u2014 Team SkellaFit Powerlifting dominated the American Powerlifting Federation’s Michigan State Championships last weekend, bringing home 20 first-place medals, two second-place medals and the team trophy for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n
The Alpena-based team sent 14 competitors to the championships in Taylor, with all athletes earning medals in their respective divisions. The performance prompted APF Michigan President Art Little to joke with team owner and coach Cristi Johnson about the team’s continued success.<\/p>\n
“If you keep adding more members to your team, we might as well just fill out the rest of the plates on the trophy with your name on it,” Little said to Johnson.<\/p>\n
The team included seven returning lifters and seven first-time competitors, all of whom brought home hardware from the state competition.<\/p>\n
“This year’s State competition was a visual representation of the support and camaraderie we see every day inside our training studio,” Johnson said. “The fact that they all brought home hardware is truly remarkable.”<\/p>\n
Several SkellaFit lifters broke state records during the competition, which have been submitted for verification. Erin Body of Harrisville was confirmed for breaking a national record in women’s bench press in the Master (50-54) 110k division.<\/p>\n
Gold medalist Peyton Kaiser of Herron said representing the team and community made the victory special.<\/p>\n
“Getting to be a part of a team that not only continually succeeds, but is recognized for our endless positivity towards everyone around us is an amazing experience,” Kaiser said. “Representing Alpena and SkellaFit as an athlete is so special, and bringing home a gold medal doesn’t hurt either.”<\/p>\n
Second-year lifter Brandy Shooks of Presque Isle, who won multiple first-place medals across different divisions, reflected on the team atmosphere.<\/p>\n
“Surrounded by strength, lifted by my team, and fueled by belief\u2014this weekend was a reminder that we never rise alone,” Shooks said.<\/p>\n
The team’s success extends beyond individual achievements. SkellaFit’s consistent performance has established the gym as a powerhouse in Michigan powerlifting, with athletes competing across multiple age groups and weight classes.<\/p>\n
Notable performances included Peyton Kaiser winning first place in AAPF Women’s Raw Open 82.5k, while Erin Body claimed victories in both APF Women’s Raw Master (50-54) 110k Full Power and APF Women’s Raw Open 110k Full Power divisions.<\/p>\n
Brandy Shooks swept multiple categories, earning first-place finishes in both AAPF and APF Women’s Classic Raw Master (44-49) Full Power 82.5k divisions, as well as individual bench press and deadlift competitions.<\/p>\n
Elle Bee of Posen also dominated her divisions, winning first place in multiple categories including AAPF and APF Women’s Classic Raw Open 110+k Full Power.<\/p>\n
The team will next compete at the APF\/AAPF National Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will face competition from powerlifters across the country.<\/p>\n
The Michigan State Championships featured competitors from across the state, with SkellaFit athletes representing communities including Alpena, Harrisville, Presque Isle, Posen, Hubbard Lake and Lachine.<\/p>\n
