Over a storied 14-year career, Yates won every contest he entered between 1992 and 1997, retiring as one of only four men to bow out as a reigning Mr. Olympia \u2013 a competition which he won not once or twice, but six times.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Though he is now long retired, Yates&#8217; philosophy on high-intensity training and bodybuilding \u2013 best witnessed in his <em data-node-id=\"8.1\">Blood and Guts<\/em> training programmes \u2013 is still utilised by thousands of people looking to train with the same intensity as the six-time Mr. Olympia. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">However, that&#8217;s not the only legacy that &#8216;The Shadow&#8217; \u2013 so-called due to his tendency to unexpectedly appear at major contests and emerge as the winner \u2013 has left on the world of bodybuilding. <\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-11\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<section data-embed=\"instagram\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-12\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">One of Yates&#8217; most established training hallmarks was the eponymous Yates Row. It&#8217;s a variation of the barbell bent-over row, which Yates would modify for safer biomechanics and a new challenge for his lats.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;This exercise was a staple in my back routine and can be performed with either an underhand or overhand grip,&#8217; Yates explained in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVMPycRDGVx\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVMPycRDGVx\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Instagram post\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Instagram post<\/a>. &#8216;It\u2019s my modified version of the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a757301\/how-to-master-the-bent-over-row\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a757301\/how-to-master-the-bent-over-row\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bent-over row\" data-node-id=\"23.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">bent-over row<\/a> where the body is parallel to floor and you\u2019re pulling the bar to your chest.&#8217;<br data-node-id=\"23.5\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As Yates explains, the Yates row is &#8216;performed with [your] body more upright, which puts the lower back in a safer position and the lats in a mechanically stronger position,&#8217; he says, noting the 45-degree angle of his torso during the exercise. &#8216;Think of your hands as hooks and you should be rowing with your elbows and driving through to your lats.&#8217; Your biceps and forearms will feel a nice pump, too.<\/p>\n<section aria-labelledby=\"recirc-heading\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-16\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"inline-content-module\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Talking two clients through it, Yates clarifies in the video that there&#8217;s &#8216;no movement with the legs and the back, as the legs are bent anyway for stability,&#8217; he says.  &#8216;The bar&#8217;s going to be by your knees and you&#8217;re not going to be parallel to the floor.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C8-EEXgtblg\/?utm_source=ig_embed\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C8-EEXgtblg\/?utm_source=ig_embed\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"post\" data-node-id=\"36.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">post<\/a>, Yates also described a few things to watch out for during the Yates Row, and how heavy he went during the movement. &#8216;It\u2019s kind of more of a power movement but you should still squeeze at the peak contraction and be in full control,&#8217; he posted. &#8216;It\u2019s very easy on this exercise to start jerking the weight up and swinging.
