On Feb. 2, 2026, <strong>he showcased his quad and hamstring leg workout to keep his legs massive at 52.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a moment in bodybuilding history, it looked like<a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/15599\/jay-cutler\/\"> Jay Cutler<\/a> would always be the bridesmaid at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/history-mr-olympia\/\">Mr. Olympia<\/a>. He took runner-up behind <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/ronnie-coleman-profile\/\">Ronnie Coleman<\/a> four consecutive years before realizing his full potential. In 2006, he dethroned \u2018The King,\u2019 setting the stage for a long dynasty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Cutler\u2019s reign was cut short; <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/dexter-jackson-profile\/\">Dexter Jackson<\/a> unseated him as champion in 2008. Once a champion has lost his title, winning it back has proved much more challenging in the <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/2025-ifbb-pro-league-contest-schedule\/\">IFBB Pro League<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a challenge Cutler embraced. The 2009 Mr. Olympia saw him not only win back the Mr. Olympia crown, but also showcase his <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-quad-stomp\/\">quad stomp<\/a>, a shot celebrated and replicated by active competitors today. Subscribe for free!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"jay-cutlers-mass-building-leg-routine-at-52\">Jay Cutler\u2019s Mass-Building Leg Routine at 52\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><em>Find his exercises from the video below:\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seated Hamstring Curl<\/li>\n<li>Standing Leg Curl<\/li>\n<li>Dumbbell Stiff-Legged Deadlifts<\/li>\n<li>Walking Lunges<\/li>\n<li>Lying Hamstring Curl<\/li>\n<li>Leg Extensions<\/li>\n<li>Inverted Leg Press<\/li>\n<li>Pendulum Squat<\/li>\n<li>Standard Leg Press<\/li>\n<li>Hip Thrusts\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"seated-hamstring-curl\">Seated Hamstring Curl<\/h4>\n<p>Cutler appreciates how he can adjust the seated hamstring curl and used a pyramid training system throughout the workout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of my favorites just because of the adjustments. Everything is on medium. I go for the most stretch you can actually go with this. We\u2019re going to start with 130, we\u2019re going to pyramid up 145-160, so maybe we\u2019ll do a couple of feel sets, and then three working sets to really get that contraction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"standing-leg-curl\">Standing Leg Curl<\/h4>\n<p>He used the standing leg curl to isolate the hamstrings as much as he could.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhat I like about this is, I think of the hamstring as a bicep; basically, the bicep muscle of the hamstring, so really get individually focused on that one singular spot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"dumbbell-stiff-legged-deadlifts\">Dumbbell Stiff-Legged Deadlifts<\/h4>\n<p>While dumbbell stiff-legged deadlifts weren\u2019t commonly used during his tenure, he includes them now for hamstring development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny because when I started in \u201991, training, no one ever did dumbbells. I was doing dumbbells in 2009 when I was really trying to pay more attention to what my training was, which was weird. That was kind of late in my career.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"walking-lunges\">Walking Lunges<\/h4>\n<p>Next, he moved on to walking lunges, prioritizing glute growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really focusing on my glutes and hams on this, not necessarily my quads,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"lying-hamstring-curl\">Lying Hamstring Curl<\/h4>\n<p>He pushed blood into his hamstrings one last time before moving to quad-focused exercises.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cGet that blood flow back in there, and that\u2019s going to finish off the hamstrings, hopefully at least 8-10 reps, but going for 12, full contraction, and power through.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"leg-extensions\">Leg Extensions<\/h4>\n<p>He approached leg extensions differently. I keep my hands on my quads so I can feel the contraction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"inverted-leg-press\">Inverted Leg Press<\/h4>\n<p>The inverted leg press is a staple for Cutler. He keeps his feet lower on the platform to place more stress on the quads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always in my routine, 10 or 12 reps, inverted leg press. A lot of different variations of this. Some of them have a really flat base to it, some have a curved.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to put my feet a little lower on the platform to give it more stress on the quads.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"pendulum-squat\">Pendulum Squat<\/h4>\n<p>He said the pendulum squat is one of his tougher quad exercises of the day:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exercise I\u2019m going to focus on three sets. It\u2019s almost impossible not to work the quads. It\u2019s the hardest exercise, depending on how hard you go. We\u2019re not going super heavy,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G2MWFr9WvNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cReally trying to get that tension onto the quads and bury my foot position a little bit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"standard-leg-press\">Standard Leg Press<\/h4>\n<p>Focusing on mind-muscle connection, he finished his quads off with the standard leg press machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cReally getting that contraction. I think this is a really great exercise for the legs as long as you can put your mind to working the quads and take your hamstrings out of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"hip-thrusts\">Hip Thrusts\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>For targeted glute work, Cutler ended the workout with a few hard sets on the hip thrust machine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou can see me shake, you can see the weakness, right? Nice burn. This is one of those exercises I get a burn out on. I push myself because I only do one movement [for targeting glutes]. I think this is the one that I do that gets a nice burn to work the upper shelf.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>At 52 years old, Cutler is the picture of longevity. He still trains seven days a week and has no major injuries.
