In West Palm Beach federal court, Barton pleaded guilty in May to one count of theft of government property.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/state\/florida\/article261683982.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:READ MORE: Florida bodybuilder pulling a $245,000 scam claimed he could lift only 10 pounds;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">READ MORE: Florida bodybuilder pulling a $245,000 scam claimed he could lift only 10 pounds<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne inherent problem the [Veterans Administration-Veterans Benefits Administration] must contend with, is that it operates on an honor system with its veterans,\u201d a prosecution sentencing recommendation filing said. \u201cThe VA-VBA will always err on the side of the veteran because its historical mission and purpose is to reintroduce the veteran into society after having served our country and make that veteran whole again if the veteran suffered any adverse effect while serving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs such, the VA-VBA offers healthcare and monetary compensation to veterans,\u201d the filing continued. \u201cThe result is that some veterans can, and unfortunately some veterans do take advantage of that practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barton began lying about erectile dysfunction, post-traumatic stress syndrome, incontinence, trouble sleeping and other ailments in 2012. He later admitted that he not only faked disabilities, he was never in combat and made up stories to get a better disability rating for having PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>Barton even dropped a book during an exam with a doctor to back up his claim that he was so weak, he couldn\u2019t lift 10 pounds.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"content-figure flex justify-center mb-[1em] mx-auto\">\n<div style=\"max-width:1140px\">\n<div class=\"content-image\"><img alt=\"Zachary Barton and wife Nicole Barton in November 2019.
