They help give the shoulder that coveted <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/phil-heath-exercises-3d-delts\/\">three-dimensional appearance<\/a>, an attribute Cutler was known for throughout his <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/history-mr-olympia\/\">Mr. Olympia<\/a> reign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cutler hasn\u2019t stepped onstage since 2013, when he secured sixth place at his final Olympia contest. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-explains-why-the-gym-is-my-savior-talks-training-frequency-and-optimal-routines-with-mike-ohearn\/\">he still trains seven days a week<\/a> for mental and physical health. And his shoulder-building routine is constantly changing, even at 52 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Cutler stressed that <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-delt-training-blueprint\/\">pre-exhausting the shoulders<\/a> was crucial for lasting progress. Similar to how he approaches back exercises, he said to use the fingers as hooks to pull the weight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cCable crossover apparatus, a little tricky. I\u2019m crossing the cables somewhere across my face, and I\u2019m actually hooking using my finger tips to pull. I always talk about that with back movements, even with my pulldowns. For some reason, I can lock in a little easier using my fingers just as hooks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, he shared that to keep the traps from taking over the movement, avoid drifting backward during repetitions:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to get a little bit of traps in here. Almost impossible, but just don\u2019t come back too far,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/pZXdt8nQ7-Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> Jay Cutler.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cutler has always been open about his training approach, rooted in high-volume. He recently broke down the ideal number of sets per body part. According to the Open legend, <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-how-many-sets-per-body-part-max-gains\/\">each body part needs a total of 12 sets<\/a> for effective progress. In his prime, however, Cutler stuck with around 20 sets per body part.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIdeally, I try to do at least four movements now for a body part. If we do four movements, and we do three working sets each, that\u2019s 12 total sets, plus a couple warm-ups, maybe adding one or two here. We end up with just enough, where I used to promote doing 20 sets a body part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith recovery and eating less, and the schedule I\u2019m on right now\u2026 a minimum of 12 total sets,\u201d Jay Cutler shared. \u201c\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cutler still sports an impressive physique at 52 in retirement.
