{"id":13656,"date":"2026-01-28T06:57:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=13656"},"modified":"2026-01-28T06:57:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:57:50","slug":"i-took-steroids-for-a-decade-heres-what-it-did-to-my-nipples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldbodybuildingnews.com\/?p=13656","title":{"rendered":"I took steroids for a decade \u2014 here&#8217;s what it did to my nipples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Christian Bueno built his career by pushing his body past its limits \u2014 and for a while, it paid off.<\/p>\n<p>A lifelong fitness fanatic and personal trainer, the 33-year-old once looked like \u201cWolverine,\u201d winning bodybuilding competitions and landing brand deals thanks to his chiseled physique.<\/p>\n<p>But after nearly a decade of heavy anabolic steroid use, \u201cI wasn\u2019t even able to take my shirt off because I literally felt like a dog who just had six puppies,\u201d Bueno told The Post. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Christian Bueno developed gynecomastia after years spent taking anabolic steroids.  <span class=\"credit\">Christian Bueno<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The culprit: <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/18\/health\/man-with-rare-boob-condition-is-scared-to-take-his-top-off-while-dating\/\">gynecomastia<\/a>, or the overdevelopment of male breast tissue, usually around the nipple. Among athletes, one of the most common triggers is illicit steroid use, often taken as a shortcut to bigger muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Repeated cycles of the drugs throw the body\u2019s hormones out of balance, causing glandular growth in the chest. Unlike fat, which can shrink with diet and exercise, this tissue usually sticks around \u2014 even after steroid use stops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I dropped my body fat, it looked worse, because my nipples got bigger,\u201d Bueno recalled. \u201cIt didn\u2019t matter that I had a great body, I wasn\u2019t confident in myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>After months of trying lifestyle fixes, the Queens resident went under the knife in December 2023 for a male breast reduction, a procedure that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/03\/health\/meet-the-men-getting-breast-reductions-the-most-popular-plastic-surgery-among-us-males\/\">surged in popularity in recent years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2020, I\u2019ve definitely seen a steep increase in men doing consultations and going forward with gynecomastia surgery,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newlooknewlife.com\/who-is-dr-claudia-kim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Claudia Kim<\/a>, chief medical officer and lead cosmetic surgeon at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newlooknewlife.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Look New Life<\/a> in Manhattan. <\/p>\n<p>The procedure is now the most popular <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/02\/06\/health\/plastic-surgeon-reveals-the-most-popular-procedures-for-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic surgery among US men<\/a>, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/plastic-surgery-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Society of Plastic Surgeons<\/a>. The group reported 26,430 male breast reductions in 2024, up from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/documents\/news\/statistics\/2019\/plastic-surgery-statistics-report-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20,955 in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so grateful to be in my body again, seeing and accepting myself,\u201d Bueno said, reflecting on the first days after his surgery. \u201cIt felt like a new beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bueno\u2019s chest before and after gynecomastia surgery.  <span class=\"credit\">New Look New Life<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Young, stupid and strong<\/h2>\n<p>Bueno started bodybuilding at 20. He threw himself into a strict high-protein diet and a punishing training regimen and took gold in just his second competition.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>That night, some coaches and veteran competitors told him that if he wanted to keep rising in the sport, he would need to think big \u2014 and the fastest way to do that was with steroids.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially a manufactured version of testosterone, these drugs have legitimate medical purposes but are often <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/07\/everything-was-stripped-from-me-during-steroid-hell\/?itm_source=parsely-apiitm_campaignparsely_recommended_widget-2&amp;itmMedium=site_widget&amp;itmSource=parsely_recommended_widget&amp;itm_content=widget_item-4\">misused as performance enhancers<\/a>, quickly boosting lean muscle when paired with weight training.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know much about it,\u201d Bueno said. \u201cBut these people looked like they knew what they were doing, so I followed their instructions.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He was given steroids for free and quickly started bulking up. New clients for his personal training business poured in, he kept winning competitions and his reputation in the bodybuilding world grew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, it was easy. I was young, I was stupid and it wasn\u2019t taxing my body,\u201d Bueno said. \u201cBut you never see the bad side of something in the beginning.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Anabolic steroids are synthetic drugs that mimic testosterone. <span class=\"credit\">Bernard Chantal \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cycling into trouble<\/h2>\n<p>Like many in the sport, Bueno was \u201ccycling\u201d his steroids \u2014 taking the drugs for six to 12 weeks, then going through a \u201ccleansing\u201d phase with other medications in an attempt to help the body restore natural testosterone production and avoid side effects.<\/p>\n<p>But it was a challenge. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/11\/health\/fda-panel-recommends-testosterone-therapy-be-more-accessible-to-men\/\">Testosterone<\/a> makes you feel powerful, more like a man,\u201d Bueno said. \u201cBut when you shut down the cycle and you let the body reset itself, you don\u2019t feel good. You feel unmotivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI had no motivation, depression, anxiety. My nipples got bigger and bigger and bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Christian Bueno<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>After two years, he began skipping the cleansing phase whenever he knew he\u2019d be on vacation or at the beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I stopped, I had to lose my size and come back to it again, and I didn\u2019t want to do that,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, his body, flush with steroids, felt \u201csuperhuman,\u201d and the breaks between cleansing kept getting longer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bodybuilders like Bueno frequently misuse anabolic steroids to increase lean muscle mass. <span class=\"credit\">Christian Bueno<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>In 2020, eight years after his first steroid use, he got his pro card. At the time, Bueno was spending $2,000 a month on steroids, mostly sourced through the bodybuilding world, brand deals and the black market.<\/p>\n<p>Their quality and side effects varied. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he developed acne and hair loss \u2014 problems he shrugged off.<\/p>\n<p>But soon, he noticed his chest had become sensitive, his nipples itching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day, I saw that my nipple was bigger than normal,\u201d Bueno said, noting that his areola appeared \u201cpuffy,\u201d a classic sign of gynecomastia. <\/p>\n<p>Over time, the consequences of his long-term steroid use piled up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of my hormones and my system shut down. I had no motivation, depression, anxiety,\u201d Bueno said. \u201cMy nipples got bigger and bigger and bigger.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Steroids can disrupt hormone balance and stimulate the growth of breast tissue.  <span class=\"credit\">New Look New Life<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An elbow injury forced him to stop training, but he still clung to steroids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the only thing that was giving me the sexual potential to live with my ex-wife,\u201d Bueno said. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to admit that I didn\u2019t want to clean, but I also didn\u2019t want these problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen you do stuff like this to yourself, you are going to suffer some consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Christian Bueno<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facing the fallout <\/h2>\n<p>Finally, he decided to cleanse his body, but pandemic restrictions cut off access to the medications he usually relied on to restart natural testosterone.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Eventually, he stopped everything completely, trying to do it on his own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day was a challenge. It was easy to find the steroids, but not the cleaning stuff, so I was always thinking about jumping back in,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t like how I looked. I didn\u2019t like how I felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a doctor\u2019s visit, he learned that nearly all his natural testosterone production had shut down, his levels \u201clike an 80-year-old man\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took two years for them to normalize, during which he trained regularly and took supplements like <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/28\/shopping\/creatine-could-be-key-to-muscle-gains-what-you-should-know\/\">creatine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/04\/27\/this-superfood-will-amp-up-your-sex-drive\/\">maca root<\/a> to help coax his body back into production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt back to my sexual potential, the hair loss stopped and my skin was amazing again,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the problem with my nipples was still there.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bueno underwent a male breast reduction in December 2023.  <span class=\"credit\">Christian Bueno<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Bueno tried everything \u2014 massages, strict dieting, even targeted fat-burning procedures \u2014 but nothing worked on his chest.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, he turned to Kim, who performed a glandular excision, carefully removing the firm lumps of tissue behind his nipples through small incisions around his areola\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave me the option of doing general or local anesthesia, but in my case, I wanted to feel my mistakes. To learn what I did to my body,\u201d Bueno said, noting he stayed awake during the procedure. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight away you could tell the difference,\u201d he said. \u201cThe happiness of feeling comfortable in myself \u2014 being in a tight T-shirt \u2014 was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bueno, still a personal trainer, no longer uses steroids, having learned his lesson the first time around.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to understand that when you do stuff like this to yourself, you are going to suffer some consequences,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s about what you learn from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Kim said that\u2019s not always the case for gynecomastia patients like Bueno. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always tell them, if they\u2019re going to continue to use these anabolic steroids, it can come back,\u201d she said <\/p>\n<p>While most promise they won\u2019t touch the stuff again, \u201cwithout fail, a small percentage of them come back a few years later and say they need to get it taken out again,\u201d Kim said. \u201cThey get an earful from me at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/27\/health\/i-took-steroids-for-a-decade-heres-what-it-did-to-my-nipples\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christian Bueno built his career by pushing his body past its limits \u2014 and for a while, it paid off.
