An east Hull <\/a>dancer who overcame the odds to become a bodybuilder has scooped second place in an international competition.<\/p>\nCharley Alexander<\/a>, 23, is one of the youngest to enter the NABBA World Championships just two years after having major surgery on her knee.<\/p>\nCharley tore her anterior cruciate ligament while playing netball in 2015, and has no cartilage in one of her knees<\/a> following the surgery. Before her injury, Charley never dreamed of taking up bodybuilding<\/a>.<\/p>\nBut after her injury, she had to give up dancing and netball, and instead headed to the gym were a passer-by suggested she take up the sport.<\/p>\n
Last year, Charley won the British Nationals Bodybuilding Championships, and says she is delighted to have got a podium position in an international competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other women I competed against were in their 30s, which is the prime age for muscle building.<\/p>\n

Being active has always been a big part of Charley\u2019s life \u2013 ever since she was a child she played many contact sports and used to dance before her knee trouble, but was advised to stop after hurting herself.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nCharley began intense training 10 weeks before the competition(Image: )<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\u201cMy injury restricts me and sometimes I can\u2019t do squats and other leg work, as if I put too much strain on my knee, I can be out of action for at least a month\u201d said Charley.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people can see an injury as a defeat, but I see it as an achievement that I can still body build without an ACL.<\/p>\n

The bodybuilder hopes her achievement will inspire other women to get in to weightlifting, and wants to empower females to get in to this form of exercise. \u201cI hope that women will realise that they can lift weights too, that it\u2019s not masculine and that it\u2019s so good for you\u201d said Charley.<\/p>\n
