But, of course, whether a competitor is in-season or off-season determines the workouts and diet they follow. Generation Iron (GI) talked with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalbodybuilding.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association (PNBA)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bodybuilder <\/span><b>Jon Tsui<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get insight into his training and diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Tsui is a PNBA Hall of Fame Inductee and Pro Men\u2019s Physique<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/natural-olympia-winners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Natural Olympia champion<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, his entrance into natural bodybuilding came out of luck. When asked if he\u2019d ever consider bodybuilding, Tsui was getting his body fat measured. Before that conversation, bodybuilding had never crossed his mind. But soon after, he found himself at an NPC show, then joined lNBA PNBA competitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When GI asked Jon Tsui questions regarding his training and nutrition, Tsui had some eye-opening answers, highlighting some of the different training and nutrition protocols natural bodybuilders endure. Jon Tsui claims that he incorporates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/this-is-why-bodybuilder-are-more-jacked-than-crossfitters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CrossFit<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of his training, but his reasoning will surprise you. He also noted that he doesn\u2019t count calories during the off-season and will have three <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/best-protein-powders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protein shakes<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a day during the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Jon Tsui Training<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Tsui\u2019s workout routine is typically a 5-day split. He\u2019ll do chest Monday, biceps and triceps Tuesday, back Wednesday, shoulders Thursday, and legs Friday. And he\u2019s been incorporating CrossFit this season. Although, he connotated that it was to workout with his girlfriend. Tsui stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis season, I\u2019ve been incorporating CrossFit (I know, but don\u2019t worry, haven\u2019t gone completely to the Dark Side\u2026just affords me time to workout with my GF\u2026Not trying to break any speed or weight records, just trying to survive\u2026we\u2019ll see what it actually does to my physique).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/jonathan-tsui-athlete-profile\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You can view what a typical training schedule looks like for Jon Tsui here<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Nutrition<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the GI team asked about his nutrition, Tsui indicated that he has a pretty flexible diet during the off-season. Tsui said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOff-season, i definitely don\u2019t count calories or measure out my foods\u2026i actually have a tendency of not eating enough\u2026but i will enjoy my holidays and social events\u2026certainly more fat, carb, and alcohol calories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, he\u2019s strict regarding the PNBA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/natural-bodybuilding-season\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">natural bodybuilding season<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and he\u2019ll consume three protein shakes a day. Tsui expressed:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn-season, i simplify everything down to two basic meals that i alternate through the day, while also carb cycling. it basically looks like a shake for meals 1, 3, 5 (breakfast, post-job\/pre-workout, and before bed). meals 2, 4 are real food, whole grain + lean protein meals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Natural Bodybuilding and Bulking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural bodybuilders don\u2019t use performance-enhancing drugs to enhance their physique. Instead, they go through an extensive bulking period to gain as much muscle as possible before cutting for the bodybuilding season. Some athletes <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generationiron.com\/natural-bodybuilder-only-competes-every-3-years-to-maximize-muscle-growth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take years off from competing<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between bodybuilding seasons since that\u2019s how long it can take to naturally add a solid amount of muscle to your frame.
